Lfs Ornaments Smelling Real Bad?

ok so recently i lost my triops......i belive it has something to do with an ornament though....to cut a long story short i pulled the ornamanets from the tank and they stunk! it is a horrible smell that i cannot explain, its not pleasent and the snad under the ornament has gone a dark backish colour, also in my cichlid fry tank i had an ornament that gave of the same smell and funny enough my cichlids slowly died...removed it and there not dying now (or there old enough) either way im pretty stuck, should i trust this ornament? or is it not a good idea?? by the way both ornaments are from pets at home

funny you should say that, all my ornaments in my tank are pets at home ornaments and i keep loosing fish
I do hope we are wrong...did you take the label off the base before putting themin...silly question i know
Is anyone else loosing fish from a tank with P@H ornaments in them

When i set up my tank just over a couple of months ago i had the same problem with a ornament from P@H a log and all the paint came off and that smelt so I i will not be buying there again. I was lucky as i added the log in when i was doing a fish-less cycle and no harm was done only paint flying around my tank and smelly water so had to change everything and wish the inside of the tank.

Tbh, I think this is pretty normal. When I pull decor (ornaments, rocks, wood) out of the tank the sand us always a blackish colour and they always smell. I think it has something to do with the biofilm that grows on them and other biological processes.

Did it smell like rotern eggs? if so it was proberbly a anaerobic pocket of H2SO4 because of lying still under ornament

not sure what the smell was, it was coming from the ornament though not the tank? im pretty anoyyed and dont think i will be placing it back into the tank! its also only this ornament, the other 3 from my local shop didnt smell but did have the black under them, all stickers were removed!! lol

My boyfriends tank ornaments are from pets at home and his are fine.

I brought a bridge ornament from P@H and within a week, it stunk. TO me it kinda smelt like gone of chicken , so I chucked it.

It was in a tank with no fish at the time, so I changed the water and re-washed everything else in there.

i dont think its pets at home fault, more so the people who make the ornament

i had a mangrove tree root ornament and there was no where for the water to flow through it as it just had a hole in the top, so there was stagnant water inside. when i removed it it stank like eggs but the rest of the tank was fine..... it didnt go back in.

I prefer natural, a nice bit of bog wood and live plants can be picked up at the same price or cheaper. Would never go back to ornaments, they smell funny, paint peels off when the get chipped, fish get in and dont get out and gas builds up in them sometimes. Basically i just dont trust them

I only have rocks in my tank because the ornaments that i got with the tank started smelling after 1 day in the tank while i was fishless cycling. So now all things in my tank are mainly natural. There are a few things where it's not natural(from outside) but the rocks are from a local stream.

Last week my nephew was going to buy one of these boats for his fish tank as anyone had one of these from pets@home and what are there like as a ornament? reading this thread makes me think to buy it for his birthday.

Ah, yeh, we've got them at our place. You can attach a airline to it. There's no where really for the water to stagnate so it should be fine. I know which company makes those ornaments and we've never had anyone comming back complaining about them.
