My very very handsome male Krib is acting really strangely, I'm worried because apart from caring about any fish's wellbeing this fish is the best looking krib i've ever seen and I would be gutted to lose him!

He has been very quiet for the past few days hiding and hanging at the surface with his mouth just below his surface and his tail pointing down. It is not swim bladder as he can swim fine. I thought maybe it was lack of oxygen but my tank is well planted! Anyway I moved my filter to create more surface agitation and have done a water change.

To put it clearly:

Fish: Krib

Symptoms: Hiding in plants all the time and not coming out, hanging at surface "gasping", CAN swim down but WONT swim down to the bottom of the tank.

Water: Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 30 (tap water=20), pH 7.8, Temp 26 C

New Additions: No fish, 2 plants

Tank: 200l

Other fish: See sig

If lack of oxygen why are none of my other fish suffering? And why would i have lack of oxygen in a planted well maintained tank? Any ideas? I am just about to buy an air pump to see if it helps!

Thanks :good:

I'd treat for Bacterial, as i cant really think of anything else at the moment that would affect him like that. Until you can get a Bacterial med, do daily water changes. You might want you water temp up to around 28 C , as they like warmer water.

Check his gills over to see if there pale with excess mucas on them or red and inflamed.
Check the body of the fish to make sure it dosn't look pale with excess slime.

Hi,

Ok the oxygen problem is fixed and no fish are gasping at the surface anymore but my Krib still wont come out. He seems fine in every way, absolutely nothing wrong with him except he spends his whole day hiding, he doesn't even come out to eat.

I don't feel I can quarentine or medicate him because he has no symptoms of anything.

He's not being bullied because when I 1st got him the famle was a little aggressive to him and he just took it with a pinch of salt. For the past few weeks she hasn't gone near him and it's in the past week or so he's been hiding.

Are some fish just quiet and hide??

Does anyone know what his problem could be??

Thanks

Hiding away can be a sign of illness like parasites.
Check his gills and body over.

Gills fine, body fine. I am still waiting for those wormers to arrive but will use them as soon as they get here.

If there's no sign of anything do you still think it could be parasites?

Thanks

Why have you some fish in the tank with internal parasites.

I don't know if they have internal parasites or not, I spoke to you on another thread and you recommended the wormer as my fish were very bloated etc. I want to treat as a precaution as my DG and Angelfish seem to bloat after most feeds and a few of my fish are behaving strangely! My male krib (who is hiding) is never bloated though or shows any symptoms of the others who possibly may have some sort of worms.

Ok its hard when there not much to go on, plus no nothing about kribs so that dosn't help.

Thanks for trying wilder, I just hope this wormer comes soon so I can see if that helps!

Do you hav eany pic's? Check his Anus, and see if there is a little red worm there. I have had countless kribs get a red worm under thier anus, then they stop eating, then they start being reclusive, and then they die!

This is my best hope of getting a pic of him as he won't come out of hiding. The only other thing I can do is net him which I really don't want to do as it takes forever as I have a well planted tank.

No redness anywhere. Also I know he looks a little pale but those colours are the colours that he has always had.

This is him 2 weeks ago out and about swimming....

Thanks for replying!

The female might be stressing him out. He has a sickly look, but i cant point my finger on what it could be. Hmmmmmm, try feeding Brine Shrimp.

They had live brine shrimp yesterday and daphnia today. I have also recently fed peas so don't think it's constipation. The only thing is he often sits with his tail up which makes me think swim bladder.. but then he can swim normally when he wants to which suggests it is not that. Wierd. I don't want to just treat with antibacterial when i don't know whats up with him.

Also don't think they female is stressing him as she takes no notice of him and did bully him at 1st but then stopped after the 1st week.

Thanks for the responses!
