As above will it be safe for upstairs in the house? Here's my floor plans for our new build and it will be in bedroom2 where the optional wardrobe sign is, against an external wall and an internal. Also included downstairs layout so you can see the below walls.

If the house hasn't been built yet just tell the builders what you have planned and they will strengthen that part of the house. Just an idea if the tank is going to be a permanent feature. You can run a couple of pipes up from the kitchen. One for a water supply, the other a drain.

Hi Mummy, floors are designed to take considerable dead weight and live weight of people in a room, just think of eight people in the room you wouldn’t expect the floor to give way. As long as the house is well built it’s safe, new houses normally have 20 mm boarding on the floor this spreads the load across several floor joists.

Houses are not built for a dead weight on a single joist if your spacing is not right the tank will move over time. 20mm flooring is not enough to cope with a 250 kg tank sitting on it.

The largest tank that I would put upstairs at our place is 100 liters. With the weight spread over two joists

That’s equivalent to three large adults hugging.

Getting a tad technical the most likely failure mode is the joist hanger built into the internal wall these are typically capable of holding a force of 6.4kilo Newtons (kN) which is equivalent to 650kg force, divide by a safety factor of say two means a joist hanger will support 350 kg easily. Just make sure the builder is doing a good job of work.

Or place the aquarium in the lounge on the ground floor?
