Just how genetically messed up are feeder guppy?

They are incredibly inbred and have tons of genetic issues. Would not recommend for an aquarium fish.

Dang. Where y’all living. My LFS so so expensive. $15 per albino Cory, $5 per snail, and $6 per Guppy

All fish stores within an hour radius of me have very sad Cory catfish selection. Albino ones and the white ones with the black flecks are like. The only ones I see on a regular basis.

Honestly? The tanks are kept in a fantastic condition. I haven’t seen algae on a single piece of glass. And when I went there when I was starting my fish keeping life they refused to sell me any fish until my tank was cycled and they pointed out everything i needed to get started. Que weekly meetings with them until I finally got the all clear to buy fish. But yes. They are devastatingly expensive, I will never again buy a tank from them. But their fish are super lovely and typically have fantastic coloring. It’s called Seven Seas Tropical Fish is y’all wanna google it.

They sell stingrays sometimes and lemme tell you it’s fascinating to watch them.

If I go back soon I’ll try and snap some pics

Hello! So I just got some Cory catfish in the mail (12 out of 15 survived the ride but the thing is I only ordered 10 ANYWAY) and there were some feeder guppy fry in the bags. I have guppy tanks, so my heart was immediately crushed despite the fact I understood exactly why they were there. And Ive been taking care of them like o do my personally bred fry in the QT. Butttttt just how messed up are their genetics? I can’t see feeder guppy breeding being regulated at all so I can see them being inbred out the wazoo. So I don’t know how long they’ll actually live.
The term "feeder fish" is only used for all fish that are meant for feeding other fish or animals. That could literally be any kind of fish. When it comes to feeder fish, they could be wild or wild type. In case of wild type (derived from mixed fancy guppies that reverted to wild type), it's already of mixed genes. But being reverted to wild type, they're much stronger than any fancy guppy. Even if they're inbred specimens. As long as they're reverted to wild type, they're stronger. But feeder guppies can also be unwanted fancy guppies or mutt guppies.
To answer your question how messed up their genetics are, is hard to tell.

Thats very good to hear. Pricey but seems like a store to keep purchasing from

My pair was traded to an lfs for something. I originally believed they were emeralds, but it seems now that they are bronze. I bought them for 13 dollars at around 2". Since then the female has laid eggs, but the male has not fertilized. They have some adopted children as well. I recently got 5 smaller corys from my lfs for 35 bucks. I don't remember what they are but they are deep brown, and have larger fins.

That’s it. If I ever wanna buy a specific Cory catfish again I’m messaging y’all and asking you to deliver them and I’ll Venmo y’all🤣

After shipping it would probably still be cheaper than buying local 💀

If your in San Diego I suggest Aquarium Fish Depot. Their fish are expensive, but every so often they have a nice deal on corys. I got my pair from Aquatic Warehouse.

I live in Kentucky, not a lot of fish shops here, and the only good ones are expensive.

Not that I know of, plus they are about an hour away from me.

I’m fine with paying the prices at my LFS, because the fish/tanks are well cared for, and I like supporting local businesses. (They are also only 15 minutes away, which makes for an easy trip :))
