Just Added Fish

i brought some fish today but need your help

i brought a dalmatian guppie
11 neons
im stuck with the next 2

i brought a male and female guppie (aint sure what breed)
the males is all over the female (keeps following her so i hope i have some babys in the future)

the male is gold organe and black (black bit is just before the tail and the tail is organe front is gold) is the black normal?

the female has a black part on her in the middle is this normal?

also the neons stick togeather at the back of the tank by the rocks
all my reading in the fish tank are 0ppm and temp is 28c

How big is your tank and how long has it been set up for? You say all the readings are at 0, what are you using to test?

Can you post some pics so we can see exactly what fish you`re asking about please?

tanks been set up for about 8-10 weeks now im using the liquid test kit thats somebody recommened on here illpost some pictures now 5 mins , thnaks for fast reply lol

neons seem fine now there swimming all over the tank

also what else can i feed the fish aswell as the flakes?

It is said quite often on the forum that neons shouldn`t really be introduced into a newly set up tank so if that`s the case you may well end up losing some.

Your guppies will breed and drop fry very often and very quickly so you need to ensure your tank is big enough and that it is fully cycled properly. Also please make sure your test kit isn`t out of date (your test results so far indicate something isn`t quite right) as fry will add greatly towards the waste in your tank. The black mark on the females body could possibly be her gravid spot which indicates she`s carrying fry.

You never said how big your tank is? I`m a bit confused, you say your tank has been running for 8-10 weeks and you test with a liquid kit? What are the readings for Nitrate?

28C seems a bit much for the fish u have. 25C would be more suitable

its a 50 l tank, nitrate is 0ppm (test in date just checked)

what should i do?

i think i need to get another or two female guppes the male wont leave her alone

these fish shops dont explain good i said will the neons be ok with the guppys and he said it will be fine .

so you think i should turn the temp down to 25c?

To be completely honest with you I think it`s strange that your nitrates are reading at 0, most tap water will have some amount of nitrate reading but hopefully someone else will be able to comment on it.

If I were you I would personally return the female guppy and have only males in there. Your tank is quite small to have female guppies as they will breed like rabbits and it won`t help if you add more females because you`ll end up completely overrun with fry.......that really won`t be good.
The male guppies will be ok with neons it`s just that neons apparently do better in a tank that`s more established that yours is, so having now been told don`t be surprised if they do begin to die off. The guy in the shop is only interested in making money and not really bothered whether fish are suitable or not. I`d advise in future that if you plan on getting any fish ask on the forum first because people here will be honest based on what`s best for the fish and not the pocket of the lfs.

I would agree with meguro that your temp is higher than recommended, 25 would be better

elisew i get home from work today to find 14 baby guppies lol and theres still more eggs i can see. She must of been pregenant when i brought her. how many do you think will live i dont want to get rid of any. im looking into gettin a bigger tank now

I`m not surprised to be honest, they`ll breed like rabbits

If you want to keep some of the fry then it would be a good idea to net them and put them into a breeding trap inside your tank and then get yourself another small tank, it`s always a possibility that the mother or the other fish will eat them. I can`t tell you how many will survive, it`s a bit like asking "How long is a piece of string"

Do you have a densely planted area in your tank? If you do then there`s a good chance that the fry will be able to hide and survive. Unfortunately there`s a chance that quite a few will either die naturally or will be eaten......just play it by ear and wait and see
