I have a cycled jewel rekord 800 (25 gal)

Ive been reading conflicting reports from different sources on how good the internal filter setup is that comes with the tank

If anyone has purchased or knows about this tank id be happy for feedback

i have the next model down, the rekord 60(before it became 600) and if i had the money i would rip the internal out and get a tetratec ex700, the jewel filters imo are rubbish, they have little flow rates and the box takes up too much space in the tank

good luck

ty for the reply

I have just read up on the tetratec ex 700 and i must say...It looks perfect ;-)

Probably gonna order one (seem them so far as low as £61)

Question is tho

How do i change from my internal juwel filter to the ex 700?

Would i run both for a couple of weeks or just swap sponge media straight over and remove internal?

My tank has only just cycled so i dont want to upset the fragile chemistry too much

in your situ i would move all of the filter media over from your jewel when you get it and carry on cycling for a few more weeks, just to be sure, the media you already have should have its own bacterial colonies so they should spread over to the new media. can i ask, how have you cycled your tank, i dont want to patronise you, but there are alot of beginners who do it wrong. just want to check thats all.

thanks

lol of course you can :good:

I bought my tank 6 weeks ago from lfs and he simply told me..."fill up (with declor water) and come bk tomorrow to buy some fish"

Of course i did

However..1 day after placing 10 x neon tetra, 3 x clown loach , 1 x dwarf plec i found this forum

(moving clown loach in a few weeks as ive since learned of their size)

Since then ive spent about 4 hours a day on here trawling through, asking questions and helping others (where possible)

I learned all about the cycling process (fishless and fish in)
Only wish id been informed earlier

Not to worry tho as 2 days later i went to another lfs (smaller but much much better) they gave me a nice piece of used filter media (sponge) which i took home in tank water and placed inside my filter

I purchased all the liquid test kits for PH, Gh, Kh, Amm, NitrIte and nitrAte and have been performing them at least 4 times weekly (for now)

Only once had a small ammonia spike of less than 0.25 mg/l (at which time i carried out a 40% water change (declored and similar temp)

My ph is steady at 7.4 (reducing naturally with a nice big piece of bogwood)
KH is steady at 7 degrees
Amm = 0
NitrIte = 0
NitrAte = never more than 30 mg/l (As I now have a lovely pair of bolivian rams)

(My tap water rested has a ph of 7.5, ammonia = 0, NitrItes = 0 and nitrAtes = around 18 mg/l)

My tank got ich on the second week and i treated it (med and raising temp slowly to 30c) Ich went last week and i medicated 72 hours after to be sure. Reduced temp back down to 27 c and inserted new carbon sponge

(Everything i have done plus loads loads more i have learned in the past 5 weeks thanx to this great forum)

learning fast i see :)

just get the new filter(cheapest place i found was zooplus, germany) and stick all of your media in it(not carbon, chuck that) and run it with the fish in your tank for about 3 weeks before you buy any more then after that add slowly, smallest fish first and keep an eye on water quality and then fortnight by fortnight gradually build up to 1" of fish per gallon, and then 6 months down the line take that to 2" per gallon, slowly..

good luck

I still have alot to learn but already know more than a couple of guys i work with who have had tropical fish over 5 years.

Still ..as they say, you cant beat experience

thanx again :good:

yeah, they mix really nicely together. Active discussion and learning really enhance experience but experience often puts the stuff you read into better perspective too.

Seems like I've read of any number of people ripping out their juwel filters and running larger cannisters. I had to swallow hard before going with the cannister but now I would go even bigger, lol.

Seems like you have done well mick!

Regarding the juwel filter, I have the rio 125 and I found the juwel filter in it to be fairly good as long as the tank was stocked moderately. I think most of the juwel internals produce around 4/5x turnover. The biggest drawback of the juwels is as you mentioned, the amount of space they take up in the tank. I eventually changed to an external eheim and external hydor heater and removed the internal filter and housing. So much better now :good:
