Does anyone have any pics of young jewel cichlids? my hubby has just come home with some rescued some fish the rest are easy to id but I am unsure what the two youngsters are but from the pinkish tinge I think they maybe jewel. I couldnt tell in the bag, the water was brown and made me heave!!!

Thanks

I can only suggest google for pictures, pinkish tinge could be anything  Oh and they are African btw hon :p

I know your camera isnt good, but any chance of pics?

Hiya hun, just tried the camera but it just wont have it at all, not even the use of bad language will get it working lol. I know I cant keep them with my lot, we just couldnt leave them in that tank it was disgusting. Same as the 9 frontosa!!!!!

Young Jewels are often silver/white in colour with a slight pink tinge so could well be them,
However if they are like that there is also the possibility that they are anomalochromis thomasi AKA african butterfly cichlids

Did you say 9 Frontosa, meaning thats what you rescued, or you've put them in with the fronts you already have?????????????

Yes 9 fronts rescued making the total of 15!, but I am not keeping them all (if they survive) they were in a tank in a friend of a friends garage, hubby was not impressed so he bought them home! I am rushing about here moving fish, our little fronts have been moved back in with the Ellioti and this 9 will go in their tank for the time being. Mags they are dreadful, I could cry, loads of fin damage quite lathargic and looks (now the water is clearing) to have HITH.

Aww poor things, glad hubs took them, lots of clean water, good food and TLC should hopefully get them back to full health.

How bad is the HITH?

Sorry hun, rushing about a bit here lol. I am not 100% sure if it is HITH, there is like pitting on the 4 larger ones heads, but also a lot of scars from bite marks, the one has a bite right over their eye, just wish I could get the ruddy camera working, it just keeps switching off on me. From what hubby has discribes it sounds like the other tank mates were flowerhorns and red devils

Poor fish! Well done for rescuing them. Young jewels are silver grey. Mine started turning pink red at about 1.5-2 inches. If they are jewels they will have the fluorescent "jewel" spots on their fins and bodies though even at a young age before they turn red.

Hi thanks, I think they maybe jewel will have to see how they colour up. I have been searching for my post in the african section no wonder I couldnt find it, posted in here by mistake. LOL

Forgot to mention, there is also a sort of turquoise version of jewels which never turn red. All jewels have the characterictc "jewel"spots though from a young age whatever the final colour.

Here's some pics...Guess they might help?

Cheesy those are great thanks, only problem the ones I have picked up are exactly the same but have a spot in the middle and one at the base of their tail (in line with the spot on the cheek)? but they are only about 1"

My jewels have two black spots as well -one near the gills and one near the tail. They are definitely jewels as the largest one has turned red and the medium one is dark pink,The smallest is still grey at 2 inches. All mine had the fluorescent jewel spots all over their bodies and tails when i got them as 1 inch silver grey fry.
