I've Got A Challenge For Ya

I'm still drawn towards a juvenile cichlid,

yea the more i look at it the more i think it has 2 much of a slender body type to be a sunfish, but the markings are almost exact to a juvie bluegill

Hey have t believe it is a baby rock bass by the sleder body.. I've caught a ton in my lifetime just never one that small.. Don't see a bluegill there!!

eskcarr i think your taking about sunfish when u say bluegill. there different

to me it looks like a young type of peacock from teh body shape but i have never seen a peacock with that colouration, although it could be a very young hap, the rock bass is also possable

Well, thanks for all the help, it has been crazy trying to ID him... It sounds like it could be a juvenile rockbass or cichlid, based on the responses. I guess the best thing to do is wait and see what he grows in to?? And someone mentioned NAFSA... or something like that. What is that?

omg pple rock bass is not probable. no matter what pictures you see on line rockbass are more of a off white color not silver. and there shape is long and skinny. with rock bass they have 2-3 strips and thats it. but very close to one tho..
if he could tell us where in the usa he is we can tell him for sure if it is or isnt a rockbass

Well, I am not sure if you have been reading the post about the hot springs themselves where I caught them, but I am trying to keep the location secret, for conservation purposes. But I am living in the Nortwest United states, that should be more of enough info. And thanks for all the ID help. I hope I can get a positive ID soon...

it looks to me like one of them "new" blue jack dempsey's but rather poor in colour!

Good luck it seems noone knows send us a pic in about three months then we can all have this argument again!!?/ lol

Anyway its a little gem good luck... Hope to see him a little more mature!

nw?
how far west?
and how far north?

rockbass are only up in central northern usa.

can u tell me a state?

I doubt is a rock bass... the rock bass has more of spotted markings and not lateral compressions as we are seeing here....

I'm leaning to a hybrid juvi. cichlid

Umm.. three I suggested a NW cichlid hybrid/juvie :p lol, but that was in his thread about the spring so I don't know who exactly saw it...

Ok so I was at the hotsprings with a thriving wild population of African and south american cihclids, guppies, etc. (previous post on the subject found here: http://www.fishforums.net/Iand39ve-Found-H...h-t199042.html) and manged to catch this guy...

Any ideas on what he is??? He is about 3/4 of an inch long, doesn't seem to be too aggressive and enjoys picking at my aquarium plants.

Looks a bit like a Ram, we get them in the lfs
