Is This Tank Still Suitable For Keeping Fish?

Its not rust, like has been previously said. Its just old dried algae from the cleaning magnet, so dont worry.

I'd go for sand mate, Ive just changed from gravel and it was a nightmare! So make the right decision before you fill up if you are planning on a planted tank.

Where in the UK are you? Look for your nearest 'Maidenhead Aquatics' they are the best! Also, the guys at my local one (polhill garden centre) are really switched on and will give you some great advice on the day of you buying your plants.

Unfortunately I'm in Scotland so no stores near me :( Any recommendations on filter and heater? and the best place to get them? Or would I be more cost effective junking the old tank and going for something like a juwel 70/96 that comes with filter and heater?

have you tried eBay

Yup I was thinking about:
Fluval 3+ Filter

and:
200w Rena Heater

Would these be suitable for my tank and are they any good?

not a bad choice i would have gone
for a 300watt heater i find its always better
to be overpowered than underpowered
filters not a dad choice but have a look
at external filters and also HOB hang on back filters
as the both save on space in the tank but it looks like your
going in the right direction :good:

The external filters seem to be a lot dearer than the internal is that correct? I don't really want to spend a fortune, is there a reasonably priced alternative for a tank my size?

If not, would I be better with the Fluval 2/3+ or something like the Rena iV4?

have a look for HOB filter there not that bad i got one on ebay

HOB hang on back

Doesn't seem to be any HOB filters available on eBay. I guess I'll just go with the Fluval 3+ and the 300w Rena Smart Heater. Would I need a pump or anything else with this setup? Or would the Fluval 3+ provide enough surface agitation to negate the need for a separate pump?

Looks good! Great find. Thanks very much biffster. You have any specific advice about a pump for the system or will this filter do the job without a pump?

Thats great I've ordered the pump and a heater. I think I'm going to go down the artificial plant route do you have any recommendations on the best place to get them?

Many thanks again for the brilliant advice!
