who really cares? obviously you because you are still responding in this thread. what we are saying is that just ecause you talk like that to your friends in IMs and even in real life, don't bring it to the forum. they are simply saying that the better a post sounds, the better the chances it will be read and the proper advice can be given.

i too understand netspeak or texting, and even use it. but some people don't, and we should all respect that. i understand if every so often even once in your post it slips out like using "b" for "be" or "u" for "you" isn't so bad. i have even done that and still do. people on this forum are simply asking to complete sentences and sound educated.

this issue isn't one about generation gaps because my generation is yours as well (well slightly before you), and we too speak like that. but i still speak normally on here. like stated before (campbellmay) it is about common courtesy and like said afterwards (Bignose) it is about communication as well. living creatures lives' are at stake everytime advice is asked for whether it is through netspeak or proper communication. we are all tought how to "properly" communicate in school so everyone can stand on common grounds. jsut use what you are taught in school on here and keep the netspeak off the forums. that's all that is being asked. and please don't respond again in netspeak, it's obvious you are doing it out of spite and it isn't proving anything but people don't care about being courteous to others, afterall i know that's the reason i came to this forum to begin with. no matter how stupid the question as long as i asked nicely i was answered nicely and proper communication and courtesy will help maintain this.

Also: there is a huge, HUGE difference between netspeak/TXT and the occasional typo/spelling error/capitalization mistake. With the latter, the reader can easily work out what the person meant to write and move on with reading the post. With the former, the whole thing is a muddled mess and not worth the two or three IQ points you're likely to lose trying to decode it. I sometimes think of netspeak as litter...the less there is, the cleaner the forum looks as a whole.

i apologize for my lack of grammer as i have ALWAYS been horrible at it even in school.

There's no need to apologize...it's not practical to expect really good grammar online, and most mistakes will never even be noticed. But it's always useful to read through once and be sure that everything is written the way you intended it. As for typos...most computers do come with a delete key. And most posts come with an edit button. Sorry, sorry I couldn't help myself. :p

In the end, people will type the way they are most comfortable typing, and as long as there are no official rules to set a posting standard, that's fine. But it's very big of those people who are willing to clean up their typing a little in order to be more respectful of the forum.

In order for people to communicate effectively, a common language is required. For most of us here, that language is English. Complete with punctuation, spelling and grammar. Why is this so difficult?

Take a look around this forum. It's plain to see than when someone asks a question using the Queen's English they tend to get good informative replies. Those that choose to communicate using gibberish tend to get few if any responses. If you can't be bothered to take the time to write properly, it's no surprise that others can't be bothered to respond. Like it or not, people judge you by the words you use.

i agree. i mean sometimes i really do feel dumber after reading some of the posts.

if you look at a lot of my posts they are edited. most of the time i will put what i edited, but usually its for typos and making sure i take out a lot of things and changing them to make them easier to understand. the delete key on my keyboard is so worn out from my typos that it doesn't even say delete across it anymore. i didn't mean to sound rude, but sometimes i feel lazy, but we all can at times. :p

as for the no rules about it, i agree as well. there shouldn't need to be rules about this, so it comes down to jsut thinking, rereading hwat you wrote and clean up your talk to allow others to read what you wrote. i have always beleived that you should take pride in what you do, and giving advice that people can understand is included. be more respectful, take more pride and just be freindly and helpful. afterall isn't that what this forum is all about?

remember also... most peopel can understand what someone is trying to say through writing as long as the first and last letters of the word are in the correct spot. the rest of the letters of a word can be mixed up and a person can still understand it. typos are ok, but it's when you recreate a word that it gets a little confusing...

As I and some others have mentioned earlier, it's perfectly acceptable to use netspeak when talking to friends. No one is saying that netspeak is a blight upon the human race and that kids shouldn't use it to talk to each other under any circumstances. All we are saying is that it has no place in this forum. And clearly you realize this too, as I have read some of your other posts and they are typed intelligibly. We are not trying to put you down or act superior. We are simply trying to express the simple fact that it is inappropriate to use netspeak in a forum where the easy exchange of information is so crucial to its proper function.

As Nevergone815 said, there is no reason to try and instigate something by replying in netspeak, as we are trying to have a friendly discussion here. We are interested to hear your opinions, but due to the nature of this topic, they will be better received if written in plain English. -_-

ETA:
i didn't mean to sound rude, but sometimes i feel lazy, but we all can at times.

You didn't sound rude at all, I just couldn't resist the opportunity to tease. ;) You are of course entitled to feel lazy and no one's going to come down on you for typos. The mere fact that you go back at all shows that you at least care, which is what's important.

Exactly.

edit: to add to what you just added to your post... i figured you were just teasing, i didn't want others to think i was trying to start a war with you ;). people are great to me on this forum. i love how it is fun and informative, and we can have such discussions without getting too fired up about it. noone has ever brought it up to me that i usually don't even capitalize my sentences, but it's all good :shifty: . man i have been away from this forum for a while, i never realized how much i missed it until now...

There is a time and place for everything. I know that I speak differently depending on who I'm talking to. On a forum like this I'm communicating with people from all over the world and I try hard to make myself clearly understood. To say that "dis how my generation spk im 14 all my frndz spek lik diz." is rather naive. You're not speaking to them. If you want to receive replies only from your demographic, that's your choice. Just realize that they aren't the majority here and you are missing out on contributions from the rest of us who can't understand what the heck you're talking about.

I agree, this forum really has the nicest and most helpful people. Many of the advanced members of other hobbies I've gotten into tended to look down on and act annoyed with newbies, and were rarely very helpful. Almost everyone I've come in contact with here has been friendly and eager to help with whatever clueless question I come up with next. I have yet to be patronized or ridiculed. And that is a rare thing indeed.

All the more reason to maintain a nice atmosphere.

Well, the forum does bill itself as "The Friendliest Fish Forum Around"

Agreed! :)

I hope my comments aren't taken as harsh. I'm a tad older than most people here and I'm just trying to give my honest perspective. I realize that many here use this sort of lingo but I honestly don't think it has any place in a forum like this if one wants to be taken seriously by the majority of the members. I'm really not such a crusty old fart. Let's talk about fish. :)

On the matter of age, it really isn't an "old" kind of thing, I have a 10-year-old cousin and she speaks in perfect grammar, punctuation and the like.

I admit my spelling could improve alot and I do come across many typos, but when you say "o rly y is mi fsh ding??/" just bothers me. I have no problem reading it. In IMs it's okay, but where you are supposed to be helpful proper grammar is required.

don't worry your responses don't come off as harsh. you aren't dumping on anyone in particular and you aen't belittleing them and being mean. :D

Thanks a lot, I probably will. It seems like every 10 seconds there is something new I have to figure out. This forum has been my main source of information, it's so nice to have something interactive. Books can only take you so far.

Erm, yeah. OT, sorry. :D
