Is This Annoying Or Is It Just Me?

if you need anyhting i (along with many others) are more than willing to help. just PM me or IM me on one of my messenger screennames. i have learned a lot from thsi form and am still learning. i love it here and glad to know that you do too.

Thanks a lot, I probably will. It seems like every 10 seconds there is something new I have to figure out. This forum has been my main source of information, it's so nice to have something interactive. Books can only take you so far.

Erm, yeah. OT, sorry. :D

it's ok lol. but i know what you're talking about. before i found this forum i spent hours upon hourse searching online for information and i "learned" a few things. when i got here i learned that all what i learned was wrong. so this forum retaught me. i hold to my word, don't hesitate to ask, i have PMed many members on here about certain topics that they excell in and have gotten loads of valuable information and i would be more than happy to pass it on to whoever needs it.

well to get it back on topic, i think everyone has said their piece here that wants to say something, and it's clear that all people would like is for people to clean up te forum a bit. but seeing as the only ones that really have seen this are ones that have cleaner posts already so i don't know how much the forums will clean up. but it is always nice to have a place to rant and know you're not the only one who cares about certain things.

well i'm going to head to bed, it's 3 am here. so good night or good morning to all of you, i will be back on tomorrow :D

Oh there's a world of difference between "net" speak and "txt" speak. I come from the old school of IRC chat (in the days of MSN chat servers etc) and still liberally throw in a good "lol" when required, but I have to sometimes read txt speak out loud to hear it and understand what it is. It does make the txt-speaker sound ill-educated though.

I don't understand mobile phone addicts, we never had them growing up, and we can live without them, I maybe put five pounds on my phone every two or three months. No one in my life urgently needs to know "yeah I'm on the bus" - which is how oh so many of those overheard conversations start...and the people taking these calls don't look that important, couldn't it have waited 10 minutes till you got home? *sigh* maybe it is all about getting older.

Incidentally, I am a council tax officer (boo) and people write me emails in txt speak, asking about their payments and court cases etc. Amazing.

wait a minute, maybe it is important. Whenever I get on the bus to go and visit my parents I always tell them where I am. Should I let them worry? I don't look important at all.

Ah but you're a child, kids have seperate rules, these are NOT the people making and taking these calls, these are adults my age. No one at all thinks badly of children using phones to call home, of course not, it's the 30's chav brigade that annoy me, for some reason they seem to believe that everything they are saying is of world importance and everyone in the immediate vicinity should share the conversation - either that or they are so use to shouting that it's become a way of life.

WOW

Didn't realise what a can of worms I was opening. The majority do find it annoying & what did supprise me was the amount of younger members that felt the same as me.

I'm not a technophobe (started computing with a ZX81 and phoning with an analogue half brick large mobile) and can mostly understand txt talk. It's just I'm a bit old school and don't need the till to add up & tell me that I should get 47p change from £3 when buying 3 items (£1.23, 99p & 31p).

Most abbreviations used are not strictly part of the response (lol, imho etc.) so even if you don't know what they mean you are not mis-understanding the reply. Some, like meds. for medication, krib for krebensis etc. are perfectly clear and form only a very small part of the body of text. I find these, along with the odd typo, gramma or puntuation error acceptable. Remember the saying 'Show me a man who says he has never made a mistake & I'll show you a liar'.

Now I only have to get my daughter (who is approx. twice as old as DiscusLova) to stop TXT SHOUTING at he. :grr:

Thanks all, I don't feel quite as old now  perhap I should put the zimmer frame away & do a quick pack job in case the weather improves :D

I don't have a cell phone, I really don't feel the need to go out and chat with friends while shopping when I could just invite them over?

BUT....
I do find they are good to have around. Like the time my mom took our family to the mountains, something happened to our truck, we didn't have cell phones and we had to borrow someones. :/ It would have helped to have a cell then.

actualyl, I find chavs love playing crap crap songs on their phones, unless your a chav, you would hate the songs. Also they are such bad quality

yeah it riles me a bit too, obviously at 24 I'm completely past it!

I can understand most of it, if there's a few bits slipped into a sentance then it's fine. But when there's a full post of it I'll try and read the first sentance, give up and ignore that post, sure plenty of others do the same. I always think the more people who reply to a thread the easier it's going to be for the poster to work out what's good advice and bad, if by the nature of your post your denying yourself the opportunity to get a load more opinions and advice then I think it's definately worth while putting a little time and effort into expressing yourself a little more clearly.

Not worried about typo's etc, I make plenty of them myself and generally speaking you can decipher what they're saying. :)

Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht frist and lsat ltteer is at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae we do not raed ervey lteter by it slef but the wrod as a wlohe.

Things like lol or lmao are different, as someone else said, it's generally not a critical part of the reply so not really something to worry over if you don't understand it. All that say's to me is that the user goes on forums a bit.

Wonder how many people did this math to see if you were right Livelifego jump!!

To Loach

Yes, and how many of them used a calulator

To Miss Wiggle

If you are past it at 24 then what hope is there for me, my youngest 'bairn' is older. You've just made me feel old again :( Now where did I put that zimmer frame?

i agree with the use of txt speech when using the forum, i don't use it on here for the most part but i do with my mobile when txting people, which i do a lot
i am older now 34 but i have kids who are 8, 10, 12, 14 & 16. so of course all my teenagers use txt speech on messenger but the younger two haven caught onto it yet.
some of the replys on here that were typed properly i was amazed to read that some of them were only 14, they sounded very mature. :good: well done you :D

I'm not a fan of txt, l337 or similar. You can't use big and clever words like pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis if you use 'txt tlk' :p

I think the point has been made that, for a lot of people, txt speak is a different language. As such it doesn't belong in an English speaking forum.

Peut-être je devrais commencer à parler français. Je suis sûr qu'il n'est plus difficile que le 'txt spk' pour des gens ici de comprendre. Encore svp excuse les fautes de la grammaire!

As for spelling and typos, Google Toolbar is your friend :) (It saves my posts from illegibility all the time!)

Cor! Is that how they talk in Peterfield? :hyper: Think I'd rather use txt tlk

OohFeeshy

pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis. Doubt I could use that in any language including Mak'em :D (free 'I am a Word Nerd' badge to anyone who knows what it means  )

I don't really care about the use of commas, semi-colons, ar apostrophes, or even one word like Lfs but when it is the whole text it does become annoying although not hard to read. I have alot of friends that like to shorten words but that is on the phone and we are 15 or 16.
:D
