Is There Such A Thing As Too Much Filtration?

Not too much filtration, but there is such as thing as too much flow.

I direct my flow towards the walls or use plastic plants to disperse the flow so I am not worries about that...I was just wondering if you could OVER filter a tank

I don't think you can OVER filter a tank but there is a point you reach where adding more filtration will not make the water any cleaner.

Exactly what i was going going to say... you don`t want your fish pinned to the tank walls due to excess flow from the return - just bear that in mind, but no you defo cant have too much filtering

As long as the fish can avoid the extreme flow areas easily, I doubt there is such a thing as too much flow either.My question would be why have high flow rates that are not being used to properly circulate the water? The filter does not depend on high flows for it to work right, it only needs enough flow to keep the ammonia entering as fast as the bacteria can process it. I find the focus on filter multiples of tank volume just about as ridiculous as worrying if you can stuff a bigger volume of media into a filter that is already handling the entire bioload of a tank. It is like arguing the value of a 500 horsepower engine against a 100 HP engine when all of the driving is done in town with a light load. The only thing you get with a bigger engine is bragging rights, the trip to the LFS takes the same time. A properly sized filter with an adequate pumping ability is all that is needed. Any more will burn more power and give nothing in return. If you want a ton of flow for some reason, buy a power head.
