my girlfriend was walking down the street when she saw a sign free 4ft tank to good home, so im getting it tomorrow

can i transfer my water from my 3ft and just top it up and also transfer my internal filter to it any ideas

also need help decorating it cheers

Transferring the water plus the filter is absolutely fine, even recommended. Your a lucky so and so getting a 4ft tank for free. Boy oh boy its lucky. Is the 1ft relating to its width, if so your pretty limited to what you can keep as 12" isnt really an awefull lot, and you certainly won't be able to keep any bigger cichlids in there. You could have dwarfs in there though, possibly going up to something like firemouths. Or maybe you'd like a tank of shoalers so a large shoal of tetras of sorts would look good. It depends on what decor you plan on keeping also. Do you want it planted, or rocky, maybe a nice tangled mass of wood or perhaps you'd like it bare (who knows).

If it were me i'd get an overpowerfull filter that will create lots of current and i'd go with a shoal/group of 10+ Garra Flavatra. Its something thats been on my mind for a while now, so that would be my plan. But it depends entirely on what takes your fancy.

As long as you move the filter to the new tank, it should be able to handle the fish that it is already taking care of. I would set the whole thing up with dechlorinated water of the right temperature and then move everything at once to the new tank. You don't get much help moving the water over, unless you have some sort of restrictions on water use.

so should i move the water from the old tank to the new? i done a 50% water change last week so it should be fairly clean?

also does anyone know if malt vinegar can be used to do the test for stones for aquariums you know pour some on and if it fizzes or bubbles the rock is unsuitable?

decor wise think im gonna go for stones wood and plants with a cave for my black ghost also have various tertras and 4 barbs and a south s.american puffer

I suggest you make sure it is water tight before making any other plans. It might have a leak.

its currently housing 2 goldfish and 2 angelfish so id say its fine

i know ..oops girlfriend just told me its being used to keep them init

any ideas bowt putting water in from my 3ft tank or just do it all fresh?

Trust Oldman's advice, transferring the water itself is of little benefit.

However, the filter from your old tank should be colonised by enough bacteria to move those fish from the old tank to the new one, as long as you keep it wet in de-chlorinated water at all times.

Set up the new tank with sand/gravel/furniture/plants; add fresh de-chlorinated water of a temp that your fish are used to; transfer the old filter; transfer the fish; "jobs a gooden,"

As an after-thought, are you getting those goldfish and angelfish with the tank, or are they staying with the generous keeper? If they are coming with tank, then you have a totally different ballgame; as your filter will need time to account for the new fish plus those goldfish could restrict the temp and be too big for your complete setup.

not sure it was the missus that spoke to her so not sure if fish coming aswell, dont really want them
