I have an old 25 gal tank that I have just cleaned up, replaced new filter pads and am starting a fishless cycle. Tank has argos play sand for substrate and has a fluval 3+ filter.

My original stocking idea was going to be:

A trio of apisto agassizi
Shoal of 10-12 hengeli rasboras
8-10 cories

I'm thinking I might want to go for something a bit different, a little unusual. I know the tank size limits possibilities but anyone fancy firing some ideas at me?

Cheers

Andy

EDIT: forgot to add tank dimensions

L: 32"
W: 12"
H: 15"

African Leaf Fish or African Butterfly Fish?

James.

When I was debating splitting my 125l here are some ideas I came up with for centerpieces

Dwarf Flag Cichlid - Laetacara curviceps
Sajica/T-Bar Cichlid - Archocentrus sajica
Rainbow Cichlid - Herotilapia multispinosa
Keyhole Cichlid - Cleithracara maronii
Seven-Stripe Cichlid - Archocentrus septemfasciatus
Cutter's Cichlid - Archocentrus sp. 'cutteri'
Rio Miua Apisto - Apistogramma sp. 'Miua'
Honduran Red Point - Cryptoheros sp. 'honduran red point'
Nijsseni's Dwarf Cichlid - Apistogramma nijsseni

Thanks curiousity, some great options there.

I'll have a look through them, I also really like the Tapajos Orange Head, its certainly a bit different lol

Hi curiousity,

I've had a google of all them fish you suggested, I like the following fish:

Rainbow Cichlid - Herotilapia multispinosa
Sajica/T-Bar Cichlid - Archocentrus sajica
Keyhole Cichlid - Cleithracara maronii
Nijsseni's Dwarf Cichlid - Apistogramma nijsseni
Geophagus sp. Tapajos Orange Head

I think I have narrowed it down to either of the last 2, simply due to the fact they have slightly more colour to them than the others.

Would either the Nijsseni's Dwarf Cichlid or the Tapajos Orange Head be suitable to keep a pair as my centrepiece fish?

With a shoal of some kind?

Andy

apistos yes geophagus no

apistos better with 1m/2f but 1m/1f can work

What about hatchets for something a little diffrent.
I wouldnt risk having 2 pairs of fish in tank that size i would go for one with some corys and a big group of shoaling fish or 2 smaller groups.

The only advice I'd be able to offer about those fish is the advice I got from google searches tbh... I'm presuming if the apisto is anything like any other apisto then they should be kept as either a pair or a harem and on one of the cichlid forums I saw someone keeping the orange heads as pairs/groups in with dithers.

I have a three males (5.5-6" TL) and two females (4.5" TL). Their tank mates are 17 Hyphessobrycon rodwayi.

Another quote
They are very peaceful like other Geophagus and are best kept in a group of at least 5 to 6 animals.

And by the sounds of it they're mouth brooders.

Thanks for the info curiousity. Do you think the tank would be slightly too small for a pair of the tapajos orange heads?

Kizno, I wasn't planning on putting 2 pairs in, I will choose either the Apistogramma nijsseni or the Tapajos Orange Head, just wanted to try find which would be best for my tank.

Want one or the other as centrepiece fish, with a shoal of unusual shoaling fish (yet to be decided) and then bottom feeders.

Apsito do best in trios of 1 male 2 females and geos do best in groups 4+
I would go for something like
Trio of apisto (any type will be fine)
8 rasbora
8 corys
8 hatchets
That looks fine to me aslong as you have good filtration.

Just to let you know if you didn't already, Apistogramma Panduro are pretty much the same as nijsseni and a bit more available if you find yourself having trouble getting hold of nijsseni. Sorry if you already knew.

With the geo I'd probabaly stick to one. It saves the hassle of the possibility of breeding (and the territorial issues that'd bring) and they aren't relatively large so a single specimen would still look good on it's own.

Does anyone think the tank is big enough to make it a small malawi tank?

This is probably wishful thinking

I'm put off the hatchets a bit because I know they jump and the lid all though it fits well, the flap opens quite easily.
