My ''all glass aquarium'' brand heater decided to turn all brown and stop working today. Only had it 2 years..

All of my fish are in horrible condition.. covered in excess slime, all their eyes are white, and I don't have an extra heater because I gave them all away.

I must have had 4 extra heaters, and I gave them away.. how stupid can I get.

Lesson of the day : keep extra equipment around!

I wouldn't think fish would go downhill that fast from the heater going out for a day. Unless your house temp is considerably lower than the tank temp, it shouldn't drop much. Even if it dropped to the low 70s, the fish should show that much sign of stress. Most tropicals could easily handle low 70s at least for a short time. Are you sure there isn't something else going on in the tank?

i dont see how the fish could be effected that much by a drop in temperature. it had to be something else because my heater popped on me and i had no heater for 3 days, and the fish were still fine

Yeah we recently had a heater break on us (was only a few weeks old).. and our fish were fine for a few days until we could get another.
Sounds like something else is wrong with your fish.

There's definitely not something else wrong with the fish.. The water is freezing. The tank is in our basement, and I had the vent which gets heat to that room closed off. The window was slightly open too. I don't have a thermometer but it was definitely way too low for tropicals.

The irridescent shark will be dead by tomorrow.. He looks horrible. My silver dollars and cichlids should be fine. Their eyes are white, but they're hardy enough to survive.

Got a new heater, it's in the tank now.

Call them up. I had one of their heaters go belly up a month into it and they sent me a new one. It took a week to get here but they made good on it. They're a lifetime warranty product which is why i bought mine through them... I believe the brand that makes the new ones is hydor though.

I don't want another one though.. If they're that crappy, I wouldn't want to risk it again.

I bought an ELITE brand one.. The irridescent shark died, the silver dollars are still not in great shape, and the cichlids are dull, but swimming.

I'm raising the temperature slowly so I don't shock them.

Next time if your heater breaks you can always use an electric blanket / electric back pad / hot water bag / blankets.

Once when my electricity went out in the winter I make some water around 90 degrees and poured it in tupperware containers and let them float in the tank.

I'm just saying you might as well get a new one... It's not that uncommon for a heater to break after that long of a period of time. If they're going to give you a new one you might as well take it. You dont have to pay for shipping or anything they just send you a brand new one... It never hurts to have an extra around since who's to say your elite doesnt break down in a few years and then you're left SOL without a heater again... Just a thought.

I'm so sorry that your heater passed away, i burried mine Tack för adden. Jag har just "upptäckt" er. Och är bara nöjd än så länge. you should get a Swedish heater !

shouldve gone with visatherm stealth. auto shutoff when its out of the water, shatterproof, its accurate, and it has a lifetime warranty. what more can you ask for?
