I got a new betta!

Karah's Mommy,
I couldn't help but picture a group of fish saying "SHARK BAIT HOO HAHA" when I read that name.

Naming new bettas is my favorite part, next to picking them out and fixing up their homes and getting to know them and taking their pictures...oh well, you get the idea.

My current bettas are Serena, Mina, Kinda, Diana, Anastasia, Caroline, Grace, and Titan. All female, except maybe Titan.

I am awaiting through the mail Clark, Peter, Bruce, Alex, Sasha, Sandra, Knight, Lady, and Maiden.

Past bettas include Feathers, Rainbow, Diamond, Sapphire, Citrine, Bama, Dumbledore, Daemon, Spirit, Shamur, Thazienne, Manhatten, Raisa, Louis, and Lestat. Boy, I sound like a fish killer when you list out all the dead bettas like that...they did all live for quite some time, I promise, even Feathers who lived in a pint sized bettahex for 2 years.

Thanks for all the tips, you guys. I'll try out a few.
He ate his first pellets from me earlier this morning. :D

Congrats.... it's a great feeling when you get a new fish, especially a betta. :D

I know it isn atural for him to be hesitant for a few days. But wow. It is fustrating.

Try live food like bloodworms, or if you're squeamish freeze dried ones are just as good. They'll help him to eat and settle in. ;)

As I posted on the Livebearers forum, my dad wouldn't want to drive me to somewhere where I can get the bloodworms. (I'm squeemish, but I could do it.)

Give it a while. I had one fish that wouldn't eat pellets. He would spit them out at me, give me a disgusted look and swim away. I gave him bloodworms every 2 days, with one pellet on the off days. Now he loves his pellets and is down to bloodworms once a week. What kind of tank is the betta tank? If it has a round opening, you can use an old cd to cover it. That is what my 1g bowls have.

Don't worry too much if Leo won't eat everyday, they can go a couple of days without eating with no ill effects. It gives him a chance to get hungry, then he will eat what you give him.

I know your dad won't allow you to provide for your fish the way a lot of us do, giving them bloodworms and stuff, but you really should try to give him some peas every once in a while to vary his diet a bit. Having only pellets or flakes all the time isn't good for bettas. They can get very sick if this is all they have.

To give your betta a pea, take a little bit of tank water, put a frozen pea in it, zap it in the microwave for 10-20 seconds. Let it cool off, then take the skin off. You should have 2 1/2 peas. Cut those up into betta bite sized pieces and feed the pieces to your betta. None of my bettas eat a whole pea. I usually give them 4 or 5 bite sized pieces.

Okay, thanks for the feeding tips! I'll look into the pea thing... although we usually don't have peas. What about other green veggies?

Leo is just in a little fish bowl type thingy with yes, a round opening.
He's pretty mellow so I don't think he needs a cover.

You'd be surprised... even some of the calmest bettas can be jumpers. -_- It's better to be safe than sorry, as they say. :)

I don't quite understand why your Dad wouldn't drive you to get frozen food. It's available at Petsmart, Petco, any decent pet store and sometimes Wal*Mart. A 3.5 oz package costs $4 and will last you a year. Freeze-dried bloodworms + brine shrimp are always at Wal*Mart, the brand is called Tetra, its in a hot pink little bottle. It seems like if he's willing to drive you there to get a fish, he should drive you there to get some good food for him.. it'll help him a lot.

Lettuce... um... ?? Bettas are carnivores, peas are best fed as a once-or-twice-weekly meal for keeping the digestive system moving.

Heh. I just heard that they'd eat lettuce somewhere. :*) Okay.
And yes, I'll look into the bloodworms... again.
