I Am Such An Idiot!

......on two counts.

1. I got hold of a large'ish tank second hand on fleabay. Cleaned the whole thing and filled it, put mature filter sponge in, water from other tanks water changes, some food and proceeded to test water twice a week. I was constantly getting high ammonia and nitrates and couldn't figure out why it wasn't budging after three/four weeks.

Here's where no.2 comes in...

2. I clicked last night! I never thought to clean out the filter sponges. Being a juwel internal filter and having about 8 sponges I squeezed the first one (here's the stupid bit) in the tank! It made such a mess that I couldn't believe it! So I thought stuff it and cleaned the rest of the sponges in there. The water was a solid brown murky mess to say the least!

It took a 50% water change (110 litres) in 15ltr tubs and two more today (with more sponge cleaning) to get the water clear and the bottom is still covered in a mat of poop.

So yeah, feel free to hurl abuse at me for being such a thicko!

Hopefully though my test results will improve now!

I have been doing with each 15ltr tub but there's so much floating about that it jus settles another layer again before I've emptied the tub

it`s deffo something you won`t do again, so put it down to expierience-its what its all about

Don't worry though there were no fish in the tank in question! I aint that stupid. Hopefully though they can be safely moved onboard soon.

hey dont worry youre not alone we have all done stupid things with our tanks in our time . like when i was setting up my 100g tank i filled it then realised it was sticking out at a funny angle from the wall it was on so i drained it down squared it up re-filled it only to realise the tank was on the stand back to front and the cutouts in the glass cover for filter pipes etc were at the front . cue a second emptying tank spinning and refilling. and that was before i even had any fish in it !!
