How Many Mollies could I fit into a 75 Gal. tank but, without over stocking of course. I am asking because I found this gorgeous aquarium at PetCo and I would like to buy it and fill it with Mollies from PetSmart. I know I need a 2 female/1 male ratio throughout the tank but, I would like to know (without overstocking) how many Mollies I could fit into it.

stocking depends on how well you maintain the tank.....the "one inch per gallon" is just a general guideline for the average fishkeeper, with average knowledge.....if that describes you, then stick to that guideline....i could easily keep 200+ of them healthy in a tank that size,

You could keep approximately 800 inches of adult fish in a 75 gallon tank!

I've heard of overstocking but that is beyond what I've ever read.

Personally I'd think closer to 25 but with that many you'll soon end up with hundreds in no time - if you can I'd put 25 males of varying colour and have a great tank.

I want male and female so I have fry but, I do not want to over-stock. (I have a 10 gal fry tank and I am getting 2 more) I am experienced with fish but, I just wanted to know how many I could keep? As an estimated guess...

My guess would be 25ish - you could probably add a few more but some would say that is overstocked. Assuming you keep up weekly water changes you should be fine.

Although I definitely wouldn't stock them all at once

Also ate you planning on doing a fish less cycle? You really should look into it - your fish will love you for it.

Everyone would have a different opinion on this:

Mikey is saying you can easily keep 100 in a 75 gallon tank

Others would say you need a 400 gallon tank (following the 1 inch per gallon rule)

Personally I'd fall somewhere on the middle and say somewhere around 250-300 gallons would be what's needed.

I have decided I am getting 18 female Mollies and 9 male Mollies in a 75 gallon tank on a stand plus other additional needed materials for $416.55...Not the best I can do but.....

Sounds goo - make sure you post some pictures.

It'll be nice to see mollies in a tank they deserve - they are all too often put in tanks that are way too small for them.

Just to throw a final spanner in the works if you are not dead set on mollies and would happily go for platys instead then you could easily fit around 40 in a 75 gallon tank. They also come in a lot more colours than mollies and are as easy to breed.

Goo luck with whatever you choose and make sure you read up on cycling your filter

Honestly, if you get 2 females and 1 male, with plenty of cover, you'll be over 2000 mollies in a matter of months!!!  ;)

I'd stock lightly, because ultimately, if you are getting males and females - you'll have lots of fry soon enough.  Just add some natural plants for cover and the fry will grow quickly into adults and will fill that tank.

Thank you! I will most def post pictures. I can't wait but, I'll have to. I don't get weekly allowance I have to earn it through chores and I am selling most of my Chickens, too. And that is hard for me.

Thank you, eaglesaqauarium. But, the stand is $150 and the tank itself is $200. The Fish are actually the cheap part. So I will still have to save a lot.

You need a birthday!

Good for you, honestly!  It will make you appreciate it all much more...  Are you looking for second hand?  Might save you a few bucks (or quite a bit more).

I have a birthday in September, actually. I just started saving today and I have $6.57...

I was looking on the PetSmart and PetCo websites. Where should I look?
