How Many Fish In A Ten Gallon?

i have a 10 gallon aquarium
i have a filter built in the back of it, with three sponges ( different size holes in each one) and i have a lot of bio balls and bio stars. it has been running for about a month and i have an angel and 2 paradise fish in it. How many more fish could i put in there or is that enough. Because i have very good filtration and i was wondering what fish i could put in there if i can. ?!

Hi afraid a 10 gallon tank is not big enough for Angels, you need a tank closer to 30 gallons as a minimum around 3 foot long and 18 inches tall. Also similar story for your paradise fish, 30 gallons would be best for them.

This is because both species of fish will grow to 6 inches at least I once had a male angelfish get to 8 inches tall and long! Also in a 10 gallon tank your paradise fish are likley to harrass and nip your angelfishes large fins which can result in high levels of stress for the fish which could/will make them ill or even kill them.

Realisitcally you have 2 options, 1 rehome these fish and research which fish will be better suited to your tank or 2 buy a larger tank in which these fish will be able to live in healthily and happy.

Also your filtration power is not based on how many compartments the filter has for different sponges etc its based on how many gallons or liters per hours it can run through the filter unit.

Sorry to be so harsh but its just the truth.

luckily the paradise gouramis havent harassed the angel yet as the angel is very small
when the angel gets so big i will take it back to the store.
and the 2 paradise fish are both females which helps them from bickering
my lps said that the paradise should do fine in a 10 gallon

Yeah unfortunately pet shops do this quite a lot but I mean even the paradise fish can grow to 5 inches though females get to about 4, agreed the females will be less problematic but I would be tempted to do something about it now rather than later as it will help you keep your tank a stable environment for the fish you do keep in the long term.

cool.. im not a newbie to this.. i have had 3 tanks in the past.. but sadly this is my smallest tank... i am gettign the money together to get a 30 gallon... in the past i have had a 40 then a 30 then a 20 but now a 10 gallon... i was goin to get a breeding pair of apistogramma cacatuoides (cockatoo dwarf cichlids) to breed and help me get the money up by selling the babies to the pet store... and i have just found out that my tank is in fact 15 gallons which helps slightly

i hmm never heard of them ones.. i was gunna get them cockatoo ones but the ones in the shop were very bland so i didnt get them.

If im honest if you want to make a bit of money i would go for a different type. The cockatoos are the most common and you can normally get them in most shops. The common ones that sell well would be
apistogramma agassizii

apistogramma baenschi

apistogramma borellii

apistogramma panduro

apistogramma nijsseni

apistogramma hongsloi

apistogramma trifasciata

apistogramma viejita

I would go for the agassizii, hongsloi or viejita because they always seem to sell well.

You could get away with a pair of apisto and 6 khuli loaches aslong as theres lot of hiding spots. Maybe 6 marble hatchets as dithers.

... when im older i will deffinatley get a 55 gallon and put an oscar in it.. as i love oscars ! the colouration on them is unusual and i have begged my parents for one but ya no.. they wont let me have one because its too big xD

even in large number khulis are still quite shy so you might not see them all the time.
For a fully grown oscar you would need atleast a 75G. They do look great but they often loose the great pattens they have when young.

yeah.. well i havent really researched them as much just generally i cant have one
yeh they do lose their colours but i just love them for some reason... if i dont get one of them i would deffinatley get some sort of cichlid
