You could have a look at egg crate. will cover the tank but still leave it open (this is what I have on my marine tank, pic below. Search ebay for "koi filter grid", Doesnt block much light (my corals are doing fine under it) by will stop curious kitties getting into it

This is an extremely old topic and im in marine section most of the time. I am looking at doing this to help keep heat down on my tank. I might even place a small fan on top of the crate to help cool the tank this summer.

Are you looking at something like this?

I use the duckweed surface cover to hold down evaporation losses in that tank. Otherwise it functions much like any other tank. (yea, I love my antique tank)
