Hi I have recently purchased a 125 L tank I'm new to this and really want advice on which fish are easier to keep cold water or tropical and what extras do i need to put in the tank is it important to have live plants and a air filter or any advuce please

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

All fish need a filter that is run continuously 24/7.

You can learn about cycling the filter at the following link. If you don't want to do a fishless cycle, you can have a couple of fish in the tank while the filters develop, however you need to do lots of water changes and tests on the tank to keep the fish alive and well. Most people do a fishless cycle and wait a month before they add fish.

Coldwater or tropical fish are just as easy to keep as each other. The main thing is good water quality from a good filter that has lots of beneficial bacteria living in it. The good bacteria keep the water clean.

You need a couple of buckets that are used for the fish only, and a gravel cleaner (see following link) to clean the gunk out of the substrate without removing the gravel from the tank.

Basic test kits include ammonia, nitrite, nitrate & pH. You use these test kits on freshwater or saltwater, coldwater or tropical fish tanks. Liquid test kits are better than paper strip tests.
If you want additional test kits then get general hardness (GH) & carbonate hardness (KH). But these are optional and are not essential.

If you get tropical fish you will require a 150watt aquarium heater and a floating glass thermometer to monitor the tank water temperature.

Live true aquatic plants do help keep the water cleaner and make the tank look more natural, but they aren't essential. If you do want live plants then you will require a light above the tank. You can get LED spotlights from hardware stores or the petshop. Depending on tank size you will require about 50-100watts of light.

Some good live plants to try include Ambulia, Hygrophila polysperma and ruba, narrow Vallis, common Amamzon swordplant and Water Sprite (Ceratopteris thalictroides).

Plants can grow in standard aquarium gravel and don't need special substrate. If you want Catfish then sand is a better substrate for them.
