i bought 15 cherry shrimp a while back, and they havn't really grown in population by much, i think my external aquis 500 could be sucking them up, so is it ok to rap some sponge to the inlet on my external filter? its pumps 500 liters an hour.

Yes thats fine, or if it hinders the flow too much you could use some netting or tights to cover it instead.
