Help Me Stock My Tank!

i'm in the process of getting my new 215L or 50gallon tank. i will use the built in filter on the aqua one 980.
first off i'm not sure if i should go with sand, or what colour as i use play sand in my other tank but i want this one to look pretty different. Back to stocking, i know for sure i want a group of pictus catfish maybe four or five? but from there i'm stuck i have a SA cichlid setup already and i was hoping for something different, to be honest i don't really want a community tank so what can i have? also if i did decide to perhaps do a african old world tank would pictus be ok in a high ph, bearing in mind my lfs has the ph of 8.3 so i expect it to be ok, but just thought i would check.

You could use black sand, it's very attractive and would bring out the colours of the pictus, as for stocking with pictus you want to steer clear of anything they will be able to fit in their mouths as they are nocturnal hunters so deffinately nothing under 3 inches minimum. Have you ever considered upside down catfish?

What about doing some headstanders? A group of marbled would look good mix them with some bright pencil fish and they would look awesome and then some hatchets for the top maybe marbled? Would do well with the pictus I think if you get the larger hatchets like silvers.

do you think i could have a convict in there? i know i said no to cichlids but...

oh btw thanks forest i think i will go with black sand, also i did have a upside down catfish a week ago but swapped him for my lil dory.

Not sure about a convict some are a bit psycho. But you could get a HRP peaceful by comparison or there are other relatives of the cons that are a bit tamer.

Well its £16 inc postage the fish is only £5 but postage is £11 I paid £6 for each of mine when they were under 2 inches I would pay £20-£25 for a male like that in a store. I would go for it if it were me I would go for him especially if hes the only cichlid in the tank as a center piece it would show the tank of from the start

*edit those are nice as well good head shapes as well should be able to sex them quite easily
