Help Identifying Fish Please

The Ehiems do have a good reputation, and don't get me wrong, they will have a fiail safe of sorts. The problem is that it would be difficult to fit the thermostat near the element, without it clicking the elemet off before the water is up to temp, because of the way water will flow around them. The thermostats will be fitted to the out or in pipe of the filter, hense if something happened to empty the canister, the thermostat would be exposed to the air of the room, and would thus measure the ambient room temp, rather than the water in the filter.

If the heaters do fail in "on", then it won't boil, as the heaters aren't powerful enough. However, the temp will easily rise to 50 centigrade, possible higher, and that is as good as boiling as far as the fish are conserned.

Next day came home to find someone had left me a nice little present A FISH
Here He/she is:

This statement leads me to believe you did not plan on this fish. If thats the case then you are limited to what you can have for other fish as this fish is a goldfish rather than tropical, which is what i think you may have been planning on keeping.

Whoever bought this fish jumped the gun which is common when first starting this hobby. Now that your stuck use him/her for the cycle then maybe you can re home it to someone who has a pond, then go tropical. Or just start another tank sometime, its possible you will end up with MTS (multiple tank syndrome) most people do.

As far as filters go i would advise against buying anything as a "combo" its much better to have separate components. If any one thing breaks you can just replace that rather than replacing both. Filters usually outlast heaters, so usually a heater will have to be replaced first.

i've got the big ehiem with the in biult heater and it just looks like a kettle heater element right at the bottom, and it dont work now, Fluval are a better pump make IMHO get a fluval 405 and an internal heater ( the more separated your tank devices are the less that can go wrong)
