Heaters for a 5 gallon tank(ish)

Im in the same boat man.my parents want me to get a gold fish, they wont even give me a break. Its hard (i damnwell hate my dad for it) i know u probably want pretty tropicals rather than a goldie that spends half the time gasping for air. I've tried to explain this but my parents wont believe me. Plus goldies limit your community options. I guess all you can do is nag them continually.....

1) Very few species can live in a 5 gal (use search theres a big topic on it somewhere)
2) As long as the heater doesnt rest fully on the tank then no, but its probably will never be hot enough to melt plastic anyway

Bettas do fine in a tank that size, they do OK in a 1 gallon tank, so this is fine.
