Heater For A 17L Tank.

Is there a hang on filter you could reccomend me for a 17L tank?

I'm going to collect this heater later, unsure what fish i'd like to have though, I had thought about Endler guppies as they are very colourful and are small in size. Failing that some neon tetras would also look good and a couple of shrimps.

I've not used one myself but the Azoo Mignon Filter 240 should be good (to be honest the mignon 60 would probably be ok depending on your stocking). Or alternatively google 'hang on filter' or check on ebay :) The azoo mignon 240 can be bought for around £11 new so it's ok price wise.

Fish wise, having seen the tank, I would suggest against neon tetras and endlers. With it being a 'nano' tank it's best to stick to 'nano' fish and inverts only.

I bought a hob filter from ebay for £9 incl p&p,i'll just see if i can find the link...

Hello there, I recently made purchase of a 17L aquabox from P@H, at £30 you can't complain. I'm still deciding weather I should have it freshwater or just have a number of WCMM. If I was to make it freshwater I'd need a heater, the trouble is none of my LFS sell 25W heaters.

Would I be able to use a 50Watt heater for this tank or is that too much?

If I stayed coldwater what would my options of fish be?

Thankyou,

Tim.

50w would be too big to fit in I think.

As others have said a 25w will be fine (I got an aqua one 25w for £13).

Okay I just bought the heater, not that I need one as the tank is 28/29degrees anyway!

Now I need to decide on the fish, any reccomendations?

Dwarf puffer?

Normans lampeye, Dwarf spotted rasbora Boraras maculatus ermm minds gone a bit blank now for some reason

Aside from fish - African dwarf frog, shrimp (cherry, amano, crs, cbs, snowball etc) and nerite snails.

You may need the heater in the winter though.

Definately put a betta in the tank...:). I have mine in the tank (although I have the same tank, mine wasn't a pets at home one; they got they got them in the following week and they were cheaper too :(; since they've come down in price again I think I need another one haha).

Dipsy, what other fish do you have in your tank? I guess betta fish would eat shrimps.

How about Panda Corys? These only get to 5cm maximum.

I use a £6 25w Chinese special (don't kid yourself, most of the other branded ones are from the same place).

If you want just above room temp, what about a heat matt under the tank, I've thought about this but never really looked into how suitable it would be (maintaining a set temperature would be the problem here).

28/29 wouldn't you need to consider cooling? Or does it drop too much in the colder seasons? I kept water sitting in a small tank for ages (in the winter) watching the temp and finally decided I needed a heater (lows of 16c).

It is possible that lighting can help warm your water.

Well the lowest you can get is 25w which is recommended for 5gallon/25 litres. You would have to set the temp on the heater a little lower. Maybe get a thermometer put it in set the heater at about 66f and what temp it gives you. You want it to be around 70-77f. You should shop around ebay and amazon. Remember the cheap one could cause you problems. Don't look for cheapness look for quality.

If you have a thermostat - you shouldn't set the temp lower...

Nearly everything electronic or electrical we buy comes from China or the Far East. That doesn't mean that it's all the same quality though - there's even examples of two factories producing the same product (either a very good clone or the same), one with good quality control (six-sigma) and the other with what appears to be no quality control. One will cost £200, the other £600. So there's fairly high odds that a £6 heater won't be built to the same standards as a £20 one.

I wouldn't consider dwarf puffers or corys for a 17ltr, tank is too small for both.

You want color, try badis badis or guppies, a betta is fine but it then limits you to what else you could add. If you wanted shrimp with the betta, go for the bigger kind i.e. Amano and not crystals or cherries.

Rule of thumb with bettas; if it can fit in their mouth, they'll eat it.

And if it doesn't, odds on they will peck at it until it is in pieces that will fit in their mouths.

My girls don't bother the Amano shrimp. Amanos are good little fighters when needs be, don't be fooled by their size, they can pack a punch, my 4 have chased my girls on many occasions lol

Although, this morning, it seems that they decided to kill my apple snail grrrrrrrrrrrr
