Have I Overstocked?

Hiya

I have 27litre fully cycled tank, and I bought 2 x male blue dwarf gourami's and 5 x male fantail guppies.

The LFS told me that was fine and that I could have 12" of fish to 27 litres

okay-i've checked up-its 1inch per gallon -so 1 inch per 4.55 litres. -so you could have 6 1 inch fish at the most.

12" is double what you should have really its a 6 gallon tank so 6" of fish also the tank is way too small for dwarf gourami which require a minimum of 15 gallons each and will show a lot of aggression when keeping them in too small a tank often the more dominant male will kill the other

Why don't you take one of the DG's and maybe 2/3 of the Guppies back now before you get attached to them. Trust me, it doesn't take long!

Best in 2's or even 3's or more i found. But your tank isnt big enough.

Yeah have to agree with above, you would be best off with 6 male endlers which are kind of like dwarf guppies.

Unfortuanately many (but not all I may add) are only thinking about profit at the end of the day rather than the welfare of the fish. Its sad but realistically true.

I think I will take the 2 x dwarf gourami back, and make a serious complaint to the manager..... oh and a refund.

Will the 5 guppies be okay to keep, or should I take some of them back too?

Keep them and see how things progress-pity you werent close i'd let you have some endlers.

You might be ok with the Guppies. The whole inch to a gallon thing is very conservative. Some peoople do bend the rules a bit and get away with it. Just keep an eye on your water stats etc.

It does also depend on your filtration too e.g. an external filter on a small tank like yours, effectively increases the carrying capacity (if not the swimming space).

e.g. using the calculators, my 17L can accomodate ~20cm of fish, which is ~= to 8 inches of fish. SO your 27L tank can concievably hold your fish (dependent on surface area/territoriality/maintainance regime/filtration etc. I wouldn't panit about it too much, but I would definately consider swapping out the dwarfs for honeys.

good luck getting a refund on fish. Where i work we do not do refunds unless its a special circumstance.
