Hard Water Is It All That Bad?

I just set up my new tank and have a questions. I filled up my tank with watter straight from are well ( I live on a farm) so the water is quite hard about 534ppm KH and 437ppm Gh I also tested are tap water that has run through a water softener and found that the water is just about the same. How bad is this for fish? Do i really need to buy distilled water?

This depends on what fish you plan on keeping. Most all commonly found fish can acclimate to harder water, and some, such as African cichlids from the Rift lakes actually prefer it. Livebearers often do better in harder water, and discus, though they won't have a viable spawn in harder water, grow healthier in it as juviniles.

I have relativly hard water GH & KH around 200, and I breed angels, a species originally found in the soft acidic waters of the Amazon. Unless you plan on keeping and/or breeding wild caught species from areas with softer water most fish should be able to acclimate to your water with minimal problems.
