Had An Interesting Lecture On Cynobacteria (Blue Green Algae) This Aft

One of the things highlighted in it was that duckweed is actually a symbiont (is that the correct term..?), with a certain type of cynobacteria.
Which explains to an extent why I didn't have any in my tank until my duckweed melted.

Some other interesting points came up aswell, mainly that it should struggle to grow with light that is around 470nm (which makes sense as light of this length gives a 'blue green' colour.
But the even better news would be that although your plants wouldn't 'like' 470nm light only, they would be able to cope and survive on it in theory.

Some interesting insight there Curiosity. At a recent fish club meeting the lecture covered mostly aquarium plants. Among other things presented were that aquarium plants do best with light in the 5000K to 8000K range while most kinds of algae grow better with shorter wavelengths from lights in the 10000K or higher range. I am aware that cyanobacteria are not algae as such but they do seem to flourish in a similar environment to algaes.
