Had A Major Disaster

Looked in tank yesterday to find half of my tetras missing (I only keep 12 small tetras).

I have posted on here before about problems with keeping my large jewel jumbo filter secure, snails seem to crawl along the edges and push on it and
with the vibration as well, it can budge.

That's where the fish were, mostly dead behind it.

A small consolation, 3 of the ember tetras floated out and got their colour back and came back to life so to speak.

Casualties: out of my 12 fish in total, lost 3 Neons and 1 Ember Tetra. Any sympathy appreciated.

Man that sucks

Small fish can get stuck behind the jewel filters - is it one of those fixed ones? Some people run a bead of silicone around the edges to fill the gaps that way it stops fish getting in?

What size tank is it? Just wondering if a larger tetra might be an option? Maybe Cardinals?

Hope it helps, its always tough when you loose fish - especially a big group.

Wills already said some sound advice. All I can offer is maybe ditch the internal for a hob or canister,depending on tank size.

Cheers guys, it's a largeish jewel 240. I was planning on breeding the shoals up to fill the tank eventually and concentrate on starting up basic CO2 with yeast to form a well planted tank.

Last night I put in 2 neodynum magnets to help hold the filter as I can't silicone without shutting the tank down. The magnet idea was from some genius on here,
although it only helps a bit as jewel glass is quite thick, then there is a small air space (the width of the suckers) and the thickness of the plastic filter box. But they are strong magnets.

Coolie i did warn you about the juwel filter no matter what u do with it it always manages to kill a few fish that was the reason i got rid and got an external.

But sorry to hear that u lost fish

Dave, I think it was you who told me about the Simese Fighters jumping in the top and I said there's a lid on mine,
but I didn't predict this happening, obviously, or I would have done something about it.

Does any one know, if you are only doing one "blob" of silicone, if it doesn't matter jusst using ordinary silicone under water? (or what happens)
(as well as one blob of silicone above the water)

Uncured silicone will kill your fish. The only safe option is one of the underwater epoxies. Although I've used Plumbers epoxy in the past, I now only use stuff that says safe for aquariums.
