Has anyone kept these fishes ? I purchased a group on a whim and am keeping them with my f1 nijjensi (about 1/4 to 3/4 inch - group of 8) in a 29 @ 76 degree and ec 25 (probably ph in upper 5s). They were initially described as an alternative to ember tetra but they are really quite a bit more stunning. Not sure if they require blackwater but since that is all i have that was where i stuck em. They were very small when purchased maybe 1/4 inch or bit smaller. They have put on some size quickly but not sure if they fill out like the ember (right now they are long and narrow).

I had to look them up. https://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/axelrodi-riesei/
They do look more streamlined than embers. A plus in my book, I don't like serpae tetras & any tetra that looks like them (embers, rosy, etc.). I know they not all like serpae, but..just 1 of my fish bias/phobias.

It sounds like you have the right kind of tank for them unless you want to keep them with fish big enough to eat them. They're pretty small without the higher body shape of embers. I wonder if your apistos can or will try. Your tanks mostly have lots of plants, that's gotta help.

I have a group. They are interesting little fish. I wouldn't keep them with Apistogramma because they stay down around the roots of my plants. They get into a thatch of geographically incorrect Cryptocorynes and pop out like a whackamole game. Because of their size and shyness, the far far larger dwarf Cichlids would dominate them.

Plus I have the suspicion, entirely unproven, that they like specific places in the tank. I only ever see them in the Crypt wendtii area. They might possibly be a little territorial. It's hard, because they are also tiny and they might be intimidated. I made the mistake of putting them in a community tank, and now I would never catch them with stripping the tank down to the gravel.

They're beautiful and tiny. They ship badly compared to amandae/embers, which is partly why we haven't seen them as much. They are a blackwater fish from what I have heard from people who caught them, but here they have adjusted to my slightly acidic, soft clear water. But if I use rooibos tea to add tannins, it certainly increases their beauty.

They like live food but will settle for flake.

A friend copurchased with me and got about 40 for his six foot, aquascaped tank. He rarely sees them. They can be very shy. I got 20 but lost 10 in the first 48 of QT. He didn't QT them, so is uncertain how many he actually still has.

Mine are hanging lower mid level but i have some mid level plants - they don't seem that shy in my aquarium. The aquarium is a soft community with the nijjensi 'fry' (really close to young adults for the 2 larger ones); 6 keri, 2 ember (very old maybe 8 years old) and 3 1 inch l. dorsigera (all the fishes in this aquarium are wc 'cept one super blue keri). I do intend to move the two largest nijjensi out of the aquarium as soon as they get a wee bit bigger (the male is just showing a faint outline of red on his tail) - the other frys are quite a bit smaller closer to 1/4 inch. As for the l. dorsigera - open question - i had put 2 in a 65 with the d39 and i might move 2 more - more likely they will go into the 40b with the a. ladisalo - in 2 years the a. ladisalo have never bred or shown interest in breeding so that might be a good place (they a. ladisalo were adults so they are at least 3 1/2 years old).

Anyway the important aspect is mine seem to be behaving a bit different than yours whether it is to avoid the nijjensi or the mid level plants make them feel more at ease i don't know. I do know they originally hid low when i first put them in but that behavior changed after 3 or 4 days as they settled in. I've not seen the cichild chase them but one never knows.

I think i'll get 8 more if they stay small bodied - they are really lovely with the darker red and black markings near the tail.

They've stayed small here. This thread has inspired me to do a tear down of my 120, and move everything out to other tanks. I want to fix the stand a bit and it could use a redesign. I think I'm going to move the riesei to a 10 or 20 gallon of their own, depending on how many I find in there.
So that will happen starting this weekend.

I have mid level plants as well, but I never see them around there.

Here is a couple of pictures to show the tank layout and the fishes. This is early morning so the light level is a little low (slow shutter):
