Guppys In The Same Tank As Red Crabs

hi guys im just wondering if i could get a coupple of red crabs in my 40L guppy tank. I know some people say do not put them with small fish does a guppy count as small or are they talking about fish that are only 1-2 cm ?

Sounds like a bad idea to me Guppies are classed as small fish yes. Personally I would never risk crabs with fish in a tank its the food chain waiting to happen one way or an other in a lot of cases

I believe this older spouse keeps them together, but in my opinion you'll want a larger tank, ideally 3/6-4/6 of the tank should be land, and the crabs should be kept at in a saline solution with a specific gravity of 1.005-1.010

The crabs love a bit of guppy for dinner!


Saw a very large Red Crab take down an 8cm (give or take a few mm) Malawi and try to eat it before i saw and removed it. Fish jumped in there to be fair.... but just goes to show!

My other half put a tiny little red-clawed crab in my tank. I caught it eating my biggest adult (over 2 inch) platy like a corn on the cob

not really, they need land anb bracvkish water. not one or the other.

fish are not in the food chain of crabs. though they will eat dead or dying fish. they eat tiny bits of decaying food,. preferably from the shore line. they dont actually live in the water. observation indicates they PLAY in it, need it.

quite right.
but i have found no, specific, concentrations is vital. i know of one BREEDER, who keeps and breeds them a 1ppm.

I didn't see the actual catch but I saw him try a good few times. Hanging off the plants and trying to grab fins or charging the ones resting one the bottom at night. Of course it might have been dying and he just took advantage but I never thought he was particularly trustworthy

you will never see a Redclaw TRY to catch a fish. though you will see it displaying/posturing. thing is, though they may take fish ,as i mentioned before. they are not hunters, they are not even carnivores. and anyway. they should not be in the same tank. its hard for a crab to catch fish, when it lives on land.

It was (and still is!) a freshwater tropical tank. He was removed after the fish incident anyway, but I only found out about the brackish water situation afterward - #41#### LFS telling my gullible other half whatever he wanted to hear! Luckily he does his research a bit better now.

yep it a pain to get good advice on them. but the incorrect environment could have an effect on how it acted.
