Gravel To Sand

When my new tank arrives I am going to use sand instead of gravel.

Couple of questions.

1. Tank is 105gal so will it need a lot and is it expensive?

2. How do you clean it without sucking the sand up when using a gravel cleaner.

3. Does it give a better look than gravel?

I'll say YES to the Argos Play Sand and I imagine you will find many other (experts) saying yes too!! (do a forum search for Argos Play Sand).
I swapped over 2 nights ago. 1 bag of Argos Play Sand (15kg, £2.98) did my 30G tank. ( 1 and 1/2 inches deep )

The sand will need cleaning first but this took far less effort than I expected. I filled a tub with 1/3 of sand, in the bath, filled with water, stirred, emptied cloudy water, repeat until clear.

I don't use the gravel cleaner attachment, just a hose. It's taking me some practice to master the technique which basically consists of hovering over the sand making small swift moves to agitate the dirt.

It looks miles better IMO and my Corys love it

i bough aquarium silver sand .. for your sive tank .. it would be around 25 quids worth to cover the whole of the bottom in atleast 2 inches

yeh it looks much nicer than gravel, looks more natural

to gravel vac u dont disturb the surface just gently move the syhpon over the sand about a cm higher and it will collect the poo

u can use playsand aslo

fish such as cories will help keep sand clean, by aggitating the surface and the filter does the rest

Question 1 argos sand is about £3 for 15 KG ( depends on dimentions and depth wanted but 2-3 bags?)
Question 2 gently with a syphon just above the surface
Question 3 its a personal opinion( i have both i like the black small gravel in one but like the sand in the other!!)

My mate told me to put the sand in a pillow case and put my shower head in it and run it for about 20min to clean is this ok ?

i dont surpose you have any picture of it with the sand do you sorry to be a pain

that is a good idea! wish someone had sugested that to me!!!

not sure if the pillow case would 'clog' after the first rinse? worth a go though! Since changing to sand I can't see why sand isn't the 'norm' instead of gravel...

Sand it is then. Does Argos do a light colour sand. Looked but cant seem to find.

Argos only sell standard play sand, which to be honest is quite a bright colour.

This is Argos play sand.

james, how many bags of argos play sand did you buy for your agaurium?? looks very nice what fish are you gonna keep in there?
