Fx5

48 long x 22 high x 18 wide

valve fully open intake, valve about half open output
open them both fully and see if it clears. aim the output at the surface to aggetate the water and remove that powerhead as it shouldnt be needed on a tank that size with an FX5.

don't use the powerhead, just use for water changes,to mix the dechlorinator before switching power back on,the dirt seem to lie on the opposite end from the intake

just switched the valve full on,to me it looks the current is causing the dirt on the sand to be pushed to the opposite side from the intake pipe

and is this what you had in the water before?

do you have a spare tank or container at all?

could you remove the spray nozzle from the tank and place it in a different container/tank and run the filter for a few seconds. take a look in the container to see if the particles have passed through the filter and into the new container.

if the water is clear then its not the filter. or the filters filtering capability.

could it just be too much flow in a 4ft tank?

thinking it could be too much flow,do you think if i fitted a spraybar it would be any better?

there isnt a spray bar available to buy for the FX5 im affraid so you would have to make your own.

i personally would sell the filter unless you are thinking of a tank upgrade and put your APS back on. as long as the APS was working ok then i would leave it as it was. or maybe buy something with much less flow than the FX5.

having a powerfull filter thats choked down to half out flow just doesnt make sense and if its still too powerfull at half choke then i would replace it.

I would give it a few weeks to see if it improves as it being a second hands filter it could have been sitting around for a while and all the muck in the pipes dries, then when it's used again the muck flakes off and gets pushed out and into the tank, after a few weeks the loose muck should all be gone and sucked back up into the filters sponges. I have a fx5 and its excellent, I think it's worth giving it a chance before you change back to the other filter.

ran all night,no diffrence i think it is just too powerful for my tank,so its back to the all pond solutions filter after xmas,so will see if i can get a discount on the filter, unless anyone else can recommend a different filter

cheers

turned the intake and output to halfway, water is alot clearer now,so this has convinced me the filter is too powerful for my tank, going to buy the aps filter and sell the fluval fx5
