Fry in tank with no substrate or plants

can I put guppie fry in a 10 gallon with a heater and a filter but no substrate or plants? just to hold them till they are large enough for the show tank with other full-grown guppies

yes but they will prefer some cover, maybe just add some floaters?

You should always have a substrate to stop the fish seeing their reflection on the bottom and to stop light reflecting off the bottom and bouncing up at the fish. You don't need much (1/2 inch is heaps) but you need something on the bottom.

All types of plants can float.
Of course some should not stay for very long but if you need something short-term...
see what floats...
