Well I am doing my weekly looking through aquarium magazines and shops. Found an additive called Atison's Betta SPS.

Here is a quote from Drs. Foster and Smith:

Ideal for conditioning Bettas, easy-to-use Betta SPA creates a healthier, more natural environment[/size]*Adds essential trace elements to the water*Lowers the pH of the water and absorbs harmful chemicalsProduced with natural ingredients, this water conditioner will create a healthier, more natural environment for your betta. Developed by renowned betta breeder Atison Phumchoosri, this easy-to-use conditioner contains wild almond leaf extract and more to soften water, encourage spawning, and promote coloration and activity. Simply open, squeeze, and pour. Contains calcium needed to activate the muscles and to develop strong bones, teeth, and scales. Also contains yucca extract, which will bind the ammonia in the water. Therefore, it is recommended to use Betta SPA for all fishes kept in small containers, especially during transportation. Colors the water via natural tannins, lignins, and fulvic acids and will make bubble nests stickier.

I've done some research on Yucca and Almond Leaves. Sounds like a great product. How's it sounds to the rest of ya?

Never used it but I do use IAL and from my understanding it's just a concentrated form of that. Works good but makes the water slightly yellow and I usually don't use it unless spawning, though it won't hurt.

I use simply betta protector in my tanks. It's really the only thing the LFS has. That looks good and if I could get ahold of some I'd be more than happy to use it :p

I use this stuff periodically and I can honestly say that I see a difference in the activity of the bettas... they love it!

I got this stuff about a month ago...

Put it into my 3 gal. Didn't see any change in the betta.

Put some in my 10gal... it made my CT male extremely.. EXTREMELY sick. I'm pretty sure if I hadn't done a water change as soon as I realized he was sick and placed him into a breeders net so he could get to the surface easier, he would've died.
I know I dosed it right, he just had a seriously bad reaction to it. The other betta in the tank though was totally fine with the stuff.

Betta Spa shouldn't make anything sick, it is just IAL extract... impossible to overdose too. I've used it when breeding with good results. I will literally pour in enough so that the water looks like coffee, they LOVE it.

I use it or IAL in the breeding tanks just before the male goes into it, it helps them keep their bubble nests a bit longer, never had problems with it :good:

i dont think it has any extraordinary properties - so dont expect any miracles in your tank

i use it all the time especially when breeding as it makes the water more like a bettas natural environment, it also makes the bubble nest stickier when spawning.

i think it hlps with the waters Ph, but dont quote me.

it will also colour your water a brownie yellow colour due to the tannis in the spa.

i personally rate this product :good: maybe we should have a rate a product thread on here it would probably help other people who want to buy something but could be wasting money.

just a thought

I use it as its easier to get hold of than IAL themselves. There is a section about IAL/blackwater extract in the FAQ

I have had it for a year or two. I use the leaves most times. but if a boy or girl is looking poorly, I use the Spa or another extract I have. All the Atison's products are excellent. I use Atison's Pro for food more than Hikari. I use Betta Starter for my Cory fry. It is great stuff.

My new Red Dragon was looking anxious and a little clamped, when I when I moved him from the 3/4 gallon bowl (it is what was sterile clean when I brought him home) into his 3 usg tank home. I added some IAL extract and he seemed to perk up from it.

Well it made my guy sick. He was totally fine before it, and was on death's.. uh.. water bed after I used it.

Perhaps it was a sudden change in PH or something. Then again, you know Bettas, they can be very picky and individualistic. As I have said I have had some die right after a water change and the water was conditioned and warmed to touch resembling theirs. Some Betta hate big tanks, some hate small. You really never know what will upset him.

If he took a dislike to the additive--or if it had spoiled....

I remember someone posted a topic about making something similar to that by boiling IAL or something? Where is that thread?
