Hi all

I brought a second hand fluval 405 off a member of this forum a few weeks ago, only problem is i did not have a tank to test it in, i and trying to get it going in my new tank now and can i prime the thing can i heck, is there a tecnique to it or what, i am getting well stressed here. how long does it normally take?

Assuming its like the 305 then, yep its a bloody pain in the butt to prime. The only thing you can do is keep pumping the thing until you finally hear/see the water going thru, then turn it on - quickly before it loses momentum. I would suggest, filling it almost all the way with water before you try to prime it, that helps a wee bit :)

Thanks

My other half suggested part filling it, but the instuctions say not to, keep pumping it, how long for, i nealy melted the stick just now

yeah they're a right old pain, make sure it is totally full, pour water down the inlet tube if necessary, switch it on then just keep pumping it, my other halfs taken half an hr or so to get one of them working before

i go for the tactic of running two filters, then you can create the siphon going through by putting the output of the other filter over the input of the fluval and pumping water through until it kicks in.

I have a 405 and it has reduced me to tears in the past... :P Bloody awkward filter! But great once it is up and running!

its working :hyper:

Thanks alot, man that was stressful, i filled it like you said and bingo it took about 30 seconds. They really should change thier instuctions. I am very pleased with it now, its very quiet.

Thanks again :good:

HI mate, good to see you got it working, when you clean it you wont have to do that again as it fills automatically as the syphon is already created!! Any updated pics of the tank??

Hello mate, all is good, i will update the journal tonight but with no pics, i just have a tank full of water with my powerheads that were delivered today and the fluval, not really worth pics this time. My skimmer should arrive in the next couple of days.

Glad you got it working, top tip - Never Ever turn the thing off again

My tip for fluvals is to place them in the garden and after a good run up kick them as high into the air as you can prefferably while aiming them at something solid. Then after sweeping up all the bits go and buy an eheim and never have any filter problems again.

Don't do that, the 405 is very big and you could break a toe or two, i am changing the media in it to suit a salty set-up, so it should be ok there, and i really am impressed with how quiet it is, the priming thing is awlful  , fill it first and its ok. the outlet is very powerful as well :good:

Get steel toe caps and you won't do yourself any damage....

If you think the Fluval is quiet, you should run an Eheim or Tetratec ;)
