Flower Vases

You could also try large food containers. My betta lives in a big almost 3 gallon jug that use to cotain "cheese balls" :D it costs $4 and a heater costs $6. I find this is the cheapist way to do it if you can find the right container. You my just have to put a little effort into getting the stickers off :good: .

I went to the local dollar store and looked at the section near the cleaning supplies where they have the storage bins and stuff, and found a Sterilite container that is 15 liters, and its more wide than tall.

13 1/2 inches long by 10 inches wide and 6 inches tall, and my betta loves the extra territory. ^_^ Even better, it only cost me 6$, bought some plastic mesh to cover it and a bulb or two from walmart, whole thing ended up being 12$ or less. If you have a tape measurer, like the kind used when making clothes, take that with you to measure. :D Unfortunately, the site I liked to use to calculate between cm and inches and inches and gallons is no longer available.
This is what mine was like, and I just took the 'drawer' out of the white part and threw the white part away. :good:

i have 2 cats: one of which love to sit there watching my fish..and sort of puts his fluffy paw to the glass...not trying to push it over...more trying to touch the fish (he's vegetarian so i know he isn't trying to eat the fish<--i know SO WEIRD...a cat, but he eats mostly only plants...and some catfood stuff..he;s strange but adorable)
so i would still need mostly..a tall vase/jar to put the betta in, i'll go jar/vase hunting tomorrow or the next day =]

Ok

The cat, like Betta jumping, is a subject of many tragedies in Betta keeping. Too often there is a post about a Betta tank being knocked to the floor and the cat is the cause. Pets act a little different when Mommy is away.

Let us know what you get, and we need pictures. :hey:

i havent read this whole topic but before you go and buy a heater, check what your room temperature is. and see if it stays at a constant temperature. what ever the room temp is, the water will end up being that. and if its something like 75oC, like mine, adding a mini heater would make the temp go too high and would be a waste of money. i know this from experience :/ i bought a heater off some guy on this forum and dont even need it! lol x

I bought some snails off a guy on TFF, and he disappeared; I never got the snails. It was a teen. I tried to be nice. sent him cash cause he asked. DUH

And I agree about the heater. Although it doesn't hurt and can make the tank temp more stable under some circumstances.

I've been using these bins from Office Depot. They have these smooth bumps on the bottom so you can slide them off of shelves, unlike most storage containers. The capacity is 7g, but I fill it to 5g for breathing space. The lids clip down so nothing can open them but a human, and they're too heavy and wide for a cat to push anywhere. They're about 9 bucks and make an awesome tank with a few holes drilled in the lid for aeration. And because they're super wide and long but pretty shallow, they mimic a betta's habitat nicely and are ideal for fish with heavy finnage that can't handle depth. There are definately a huge variety of non-aquarium containers for someone short on space and money.

that's american..and also the places here...the like..30 gal. tanks are about 150$ but then the 10 gallons are about 100$..
so i don't it's really messed up here where i live in canada.
and the vase is about 5$ canadian..
so i think i'll probably end up going with that!

and do the bettas like having construction paper backgrounds? or not? (you know how most f.w. tanks ahve those background things..on my 10 gal. i have solid blue background..and i was wondering if betta's like that aswell or not??
and will they get constantly annoyed if i have a cat that will sit infront of him for about an hour a day just watching him (not trying to eat it..LOL)

 100 Canadian? I lived Right by BC and could get a 10g for 10 bucks!

I assumed tamara was talking about some tricked out Eclipse 12 or nana cube or something. Even so $100 Canadian is a bit much. But with others like RW and Sanadi that have posted, for less than $10 dollars usd a person can find something perhaps not so artistic but more appropriate for the fish than a vase. Like I said I tried to find some arty thing but gave up. I do plan on the nice lily style fish bowl for Quasi--just because.

You should be able to find a glass 10 usg for $10 usd. No hood, no nothing just a glass tank. Even my expensive lps has them, let alone petco or petsmart. I just saw a 1.77 usg w/hood, light, filter, substrate, & plant on the net at petco for $19 usd. When I have watched I have found other setups for less and at the stores too. Still, these other things are available.
