Hi,
I'm not sure where this topic belongs, please move where required :)

We're struggling with flea problem here, four legged pets are frontlined- cat and dog and so far we've tried shake and vac type powders, but we seem to be losing the battle. Spoken to the vet and he mentioned fleas in the area seem to be getting immune to frontline and he cheerfully recommended floggers for the house. The problem is- I'm worried about using any sprays and floggers as I have two fish tanks- one in living room and one in the kitchen. I worry fumes etc could harm the fishes :(

Any input and advice, personal experiences etc would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

flea medications are very toxic to fish! make sure you cover the tanks with very thick towels better yet plastic. just tape some garbage bags around the tops of your tanks. be careful when removing. when its time to take the plastic off be very careful and do immediate waterchanges on each tank as you remove the coverings. do it one by one.
dont panic, just make sure you take appropriate precautions.
fleas are REALLLLLY bad this year. indoor cats even got them  go figure.
best of luck with the fleas. dont worry too much about the fish. just make sure the tanks are sealed up.

cheers

Thank you so much!
I'm really at the end of my wits with fleas, in all years of having pets this must be the worse :(
I'm going to go and have a go, otherwise my kids will be eaten alive.

Will let you know how the fishes are.

For the living room tank (tropical) I used 3 fleece throws, quite large ones, folded them to fit over the tank lid and layered them one on the top of another and then added picnic blanker, which is waterproof fabric backed, and secured them all around the tank using bungee cords. For the kitchen- where I wasn't fogging, but just to be safe, I used another single throw and a bin liner- this tank is tall and narrow so fit in bin bag perfectly!

I let the foggers over night and in the morning made sure to have open all windows and patio doors for couple of hours and then, as pp said- slowly peeled off the layers. Fishies were just fine. I did round 40% water change, same in the kitchen and it's day 3 and everything is fine.

Great news all around, fleas have died off, together with few ginormous spiders

I found this: http://wolfcreekranch1.tripod.com/defaq.html and used where we have carpets. Undortunately whole downstairs is hardwood, so it's tricky to use there.
Quite amazing, how well it works and how many benefits it has! Only dead bodies so far! Thought I'll share, maybe other fish owners suffer from bug plague too  and this stuff is perfectly safe to use round the fishies and kids

Thanks again for tips! :good:
