Fish Tank Size

I have a budget of £50 and looking to get a fish tank

I have seen two tanks

Which one is better?

I am also considering getting a heater and getting some tropical fish as listed below.
Is that too many for the above tanks or adequate?

2 Zebra Danios
2 Gold Danios
2 Leopard Danios
4 Assorted Platys
2 Swordtails (Pair)
3 Cherry Barbs
3 White Cloud Mountain Minnows
6 Neon Tetras


As I am limited to £50 and the above not suitable any suggestions as to a bigger tank for less than £50 ?

Not all suitable but reckon you could have any ONE of the choices but certainly not all!!!

I'd always go for the biggest tank you can afford or have space for. You won't fit all of those fish in to these tiny tanks though.

• For that amount of money you could do a lot worse than a Clearseal tank from Pets At Home, if looking to buy new... http/www.petsathome.com/shop/aquarium-by-clearseal-(available-in-store-only)-36345
• You could get the 30x15x12 inch (~75x45x30cm, ~101l) for £33, or if you can stretch to an extra £2 get the 36 inch long version (~125l, but that extra length will be appreciated).

Second hand on Ebay you could get a deal for £50 eg. my 540l tank plus stand cost me a mere £51 in the summer!

Neither tank you linked to is suitable any of those fish beyond fry size!

Sorry, but this cannot be overstated

• Danios really need a long tank despite being small fish, ideally a 4-footer, but a 3 might suffice.
• Platy males are quite nasty to each other
• Cherry Barb and Neon Tetras need warmer tanks than those other fish, the others need sub-tropical temps of ~18-20C
• Neon Tetras often do badly in newly setup tanks, much better odds for them six months after "cycling."
• Most fish you list are ones that do much better in 6+ groups

Welcome to the forum! Of those two tanks I would go for the 35 liter one it gives you more options in the long run.

Of the fish you have listed I would forget the 2 Zebra Danios,2 Gold Danios,2 Leopard Danios and 2 Swordtails (Pair) - the Danios while staying small are very fast active fish that need a big tank to swim around in and the swordtails grow to large for that size tank, also I would avoid mixing females and male livebearers as in a small tank you will quickly run into problems with lots and lots of babies.

Also most of the fish on your list are schooling fish, this means that they need to be in groups of at least 5/6 to live healthily in your tank. In the wild these fish are often found in hundreds if not thousands in some cases so it is important to keep them in good numbers to make their natural defence mechanisms, hierachy and neumerous other issues correct for the fish.

Of the other fish on your list you have some good ideas as far as what you could mix comfortably.

If this was my tank and I was choosing from those fish I would do something like this

2 Male Platys (any colour)
5 Cherry Barbs
5 White Cloud Mountain Minnows

This would give you a nice mix of species and colours and all of those fish are comfortable in a slightly cooler tank making them more compatable than some of the others on the list.

You could check your local paper which often have fish tanks for sale quite cheap under the pet accessaries section. Would allow you to get a cheaper, larger 2nd hand tank.

If you do go ahead with either tank (imo, 2nd one is better) then once cycled then it would be an ideal tank for a SINGLE Betta boy (aka, Siamese Fighting Fish)

Please research or ask here BEFORE making any choice as these are little lives we are dealing with...... btw

A friend of mine has those fish and is moving out of the country so i offered to take them as a batch as was easier, unfortuinately they sold the tank so cant get it so having to get my own. but with limited funds am a bit screwed.

They would fit in there but they are fast fish and like alot of room. I personally wouldnt keep them in anything less than a 2' tank.
