Finally Have Figure Eights

Theres four of them in a Juwel 180 (40 Litre), I might get rid of my Discus and put the puffers in their 53 Gallon, they need full marine salt? ####sake!! I dont know if i should get rid of them and get figure eights, these ceylons look ugly when they reach 5 - 6 inches.  :X

is 40 liters equal to 10 us gallons? if so 4 8's in that tank is just waiting for a disater. In that size tank 1 8 would be ok, and maybe 2 with great attention but that might be a stretch. Id return them and get figure 8's but if you put them in the 53 gallon tank id keep 2 of the ceylons, i think they look cool when they get that lenght, theyre so robust! Are you getting rid of your discus to bouse these puffers, or are you jus buying a new tank for the discus? I wouldnt get rid of old fish to get new fish but thats just my opinion.

I think you should keep the Ceylon puffers, especially since you want to keep multiple puffers in the same tank if it's true that the Ceylons are not very aggressive towards each other that is. If you ask me the Ceylons are beautiful and 6-7" is a nice fun size. If it means anything to you my wife has Figure-Eight and she's jealous of your Ceylons! You should have a bigger tank though. 10G is way too small for all those guys.

sorry, i mean 40 gallons. Yeah, im thinking about getting rid of the discus to house the puffers, but even a 53 gallon is too small for fully grown ceylons?? I heard the min tank size is 50 gal.

If i kept these ceylons could I keep them in the same salt level as Figure Eights which is what I was planning? Or higher salt level?

Think a fish store should give me money for my discus (pictured below) if I got rid of them? Theres 7 all together.

How many Discus could fairly go into my 40 gal?

Those don't look like figure-eights! Seems to me that you have Ceylon Puffers that look very similar but get much larger. See the spots on the rear flanks. On a figure-eight they don't have those, just small amounts of spots but mostly squiggly lines.

i have a pair of figure 8's and both look pretty different from each other - one is darkly marked with a lot bigger colour patches, the other is a lot paler with spots and squiggles. the best way to tell between the two (other than size when fully grown) is the presence of the two eyespots at the base of the caudal fin and dorsal fins in the figure 8's - the ones that give them their latin name (bioccelatus - two eyespots). Cant tell too well from the pics but at least one in the first pic seems to have eyespots present.

i've been waiting ages just to find one ceylon, jammy sod if you have managed to find four! Where abouts are you in the UK? Also if you dont mind me asking how much did they cost you?

Blackpool, they cost £3 each, the guy in the shop thought they were figure eights, he also said you can keep them in freshwater all their lives. Show you how much he knows about fish....

if you picked up ceylons for 3 quid each then i would be very happy if i were you - i just paid 12 quid for a single 3" specimen, and another lfs had bigger ones marked up at 20 quid each a short while back. Incidentally the other lfs that had the bigger ceylons originally had marked them up as figure 8's too.

can you get a decent side-on pic of the puffers? if theyve got a spot at the base of the caudal fin and one at the base of the dorsal fin on both sides then you have figure 8's

sorry i dont know much about ceylons, but i think a lfs would definately give you $ for you discus, go to a mom and pops local lfs, not a chain store. (you probally already know that, but just in case :) )

and i love that sand, what type is it?

Looks like Silica "Play Sand". It's usually sold at hardware stores at about $3-4USD per 50lb bag. To put that into perspective I only used 3/4 of a bag in my 40G Breeder. Make sure you wash it really well.
