Hello,
My husband is in the navy and has gone away for 6 months. Now the problems arise with 'HIS' fish tank lol.
We have a 4ft fish tank with two external filters, on is an interpet and one is an EHEIM. One started making a funny noise ages ago so i turned it off and then other started making a funny noise this morning so i turned that off too. I think they just need a bit of a clean but i don't know how to take them apart, how to clean them or how to put them back together. I can't find the manuals and have had no success finding anything on the net so i thought i would try a forum?
Or if anyone lives in near portsmouth and want a 4ft fish tank, two filters and anything else that we have to go with with it for £100 come and get it coz its doing my head in.

Many thanks

Cara

turn those fitlers back on!!! ahhh lol...hopefuly this tank isnt heavily stocked. turn them on and do a water change closely after. amonia will spike and kill these fish.

this really needs to be posted in the emrgency section!

oh my giddy on, you`ll be in his bad books when he gets home

They are probably just dirty. If you can post a pic of the filters we should be able to help you take them apart and clean them.
Generally tho you just unclip the lid and wash the filter materials out in a bucket of tank water. When they are clean put them in the tank while you wash out the filter casing and motor with tap water. The motor has an impellor (magnet with plastic blades on) and this needs to be taken out and washed to remove the gunk that has built up on it.
Once you have done that put them back together and clip the lid on. Make sure the rubber O-ring is in the right spot. Connect the drain and refill hoses to the filter and suck on the end of the return hose. This will start water syphoning down into the filter. Once it is full then turn the filter back on. Give the filter a gentle shake/tap to remove the air in it and it should run nicely and quietly.

oh my goodness......
The fish are going to die!!! they have been off for two days now!!
I'm going to take the fish out and give them away then sell the tank. I can't possibly turn the filters back on. there is no water being sucked in and no water flowing out into the tank?? That it now it has to go!!

Thanks for all your help, but i think i'm a lost cause on this one??

Many Thanks to those who replied to my despatate cries for help, thank you!
Here is an update of what happend.....
As some of you know two external filters broke down and i couldn't fix them. My situation would have left me with dead fish, stagnant water and a very smelly tank full of dead fish and water. I decided that i would have to bite the big one and fix the problem, baring in mind that 1) I am a woman 2) I am blond & 3) 1+2 = clueless!!! (No offence to any other woman, this is just me poking fun at myself) lol
Any way..... i gingerly unclipped the clips around the outside of the filter and lifted the top off, not knowing that the the tubes attached to the filter had non return valves that needed to be turned annnnd the tube that filters the water was still in........................the water. If you haven't guessed it yet. The water then flowed down the tube and into the now opened filter which was overflowing onto my gorgeous dinning room carpet. To cut a long story short, the tank is now empty, the smell has only just gone from the dinning room and i gave my husbands fish away, annnd he still loves me?????????? Bless him, maybe for our first anniversary he will present me with divorce papers (i sincerely hope not though)!!
Thanks again everyone!!
Cara (still Mrs dibbs) x
