Filters,help

Thanks guys I am well aware both filters need to be run together for a few weeks before I remove the UGF.

Thanks but when I said i was short of plugs I mean the sockets are already overloaded to the point of explosion we have 4, 6 and even 8 ocket adapters to support my fish and snakes.

Can anyone answer my question about how the external filters which clip onto the side of your tank work?

Gotcha. Confused me for a minute there.: You are talking about HOB filters (Hang On Back)....

They work just like any other filter does.
You can get good ones.
You can get bad ones.

I think there is a pin on HOBs somewhere........

Anyway, now you know what they are called, you can properly reasearch them.

I have no experience of them. I use a crappy came-with-the-tank internal.

I think the order of preferece (least first) is:
Internal.
HOB.
External.

But now I'm just guessing.

Thanks for that. So you think it is better to go for the Eheim?

yup - nobody has a bad word to say about the eheim classic range :)

...well if you let air into them I found they can be difficult to start again 'cause there's no primer, but that's just the nature of the beast I guess.

I am an Elecrical & Electronics Engineer so may be qualified to answer that question albeit from a distance so to speak.

The pump inside these systems won't take much current (unlike a bar fire gobbling up 10+ Amps) - probably about 1 amp tops. I would not worry about having to use an adapter. If it were me, I'd take the German plug completely off and replace it with a British one. The Germans are pretty hot on standards and the European one TUV is indeed a German company. European wide standards that apply to all electrical equipment sold and that includes the UK. Any electrical equipment that I design has to be TUV approved or it cannot be sold - for the stuff I design I am talking about even higher Medical standards approvals.

Thank you very much. Just the answer I was looking for. Glad to know there i no danger in just snipping of the plug and wiring up a british one.

Thanks again.

Just one last post to say thanks for everyones help. I will be ordering the filter as soon as my dad gets in.

If you are worried about re-wiring the plug yourself or have ANY doubts on how to do this, ask a local lighting shop or electrical shop & they should be happy to do it for you.

I'll be fine as long as the wires are the same colours?
