How often are you suppose to clean your filter?

a lot depends on the filter, when i had internals i had to do them weekly otherwise they would block up, the externals i prob do one every three months usually cos the motor case lifts because a snail gets under it and since i have to take the thing apart i may as well clean it, the other gets done every six months, these fluvals are so good, di

I used to do my internal about every fortnight, external now every 4-6 weeks. I guess if you have a higher bio load (more fish) then you'll need to do it more frequently. If you notice the flow become weaker from the filter then it may be getting clogged and need a clean right away.
