Filter Not Running For An Hour!

well...i live in pakistan where there is ahuge energy crisis so we dont have electricity every other hour .....like its like electricity on and then next hour off then next hour on and next hour off.....(sorry for the bad english though)but iwant a canister filter and want to remove my undergravel filter....so what i wanted to ask was that will the bacteria in the canister filter die if they dont run for an hour.we do have a generator for our house but we turn it off when we go to vacations.

Sorry to hear that you're having problems but they won't really harm your bacteria colony. Nitrifying bacteria are quite slow to die off. Most reports say 8 to 15 percent per day without food so as long as they media stays wet which it will in a canister filter, the bacteria colony will be fine. Once the power comes back on, they will once again have food passing by so you should have any issues at all. Even an outage of 24 hours won't cause enough die-off to have any adverse effect

As long as the power comes back on in a reasonable time, there will be no problem from the intermittent outages. If it stayed off for a day or more it might begin to cause problems with the fish and the filter bacteria.
