My internal filter failed with a burning smell last night. On inspection it is goosed.

Problem - I have no money for a replacement until next Friday, and nothing for even a small cheap thing till Tuesday.

The filter media is sat at the bottom of the tank in The filter baskets

I currently have the lights on as normal so that The plants I have can absorb some of the toxins. Stopped with feeding to minimize waste.

Looking to borrow a filter off a mate if I can but no luck yet

. Any advice other than buy a replacement ASAP?

If you have a air pump or power filter I would think if you could cause a flow through the baskets this would be beneficial even it its just a load of bubbles.
Maybe a super cheep HOB and over stock the media into it.. flow is king here I would think. get water passing across the media In whatever method you can until you can fix the core problem

The only flow in the tank is from my yeast co2 kit(s). I don't think that will help though.

My first thought was that I should have got a powerhead months ago when I saw one cheap.

I've freed up a tenner, I should be able to get something tomorrow and do daily small water changes

if you can suspend your media in a net bag or basket and put an airstone underneath to make water flow upwards though the media you shouldbe ok, will also help aerate the water to keep oxygen levels up.

just agitate the water passing the media in whatever method possible until you can rectify the situation. you may loose a bit but save plenty, FLOW IS KING

I suggest holding a tray of media in each hand then moving it around in the water while you use your tongue to agitate the surface of the water. Obviously you cannot stop doing this so you will need a caring family member to feed you.

I was expecting that to be utterly rubbish, but in actual fact, its quite a nice little DIY project. The only issue i have with anything air powered, is the noise it makes, otherwise i would probably have a crack at making a few of these myself. but, that said, for £12 i can buy an internal electric filter to do the same job....so on second thoughts....i probably wouldn't :)

Utterly pathetic waste in itself .. you have a few pints did you??

Identifying a tongue in cheek comical post isn't one of your strong points is it :)

I nearly dropped my phone when I was reading this lol made me laugh fair play

Thanks for all the advice.

No where to buy a filter after work, but no signs of distress from any fish and the shrimp seem very happy right now.

I will be doing a.25% water change tomorrow and probably 10 to 20% a day till I have a replacement filter.

It's going a bit cold in the tank at the moment with no flow its dropped 6degrees in some parts :-/

Your brand of humor is a bit off to me, sorry, I'll try to accommodate as your right, I did snap a bit for little reason.
Maybe watch a bit of , (shudders a bit) Benny hill to get in the groove :fun:
