Thanks ,that`s something tolook forward to doing,is this ich common,and what medication do you use? I wish i`d listened to everybody now and put sand in first,thought that sand would be a problem when i did water changes though as it takes a long time to settle ,and wouldn`t this effect the fish?

Think ich is one of the most common diseases but im not sure, i've had it once in my 3 or so year of fish keeping.
I recently switched 2 tanks from gravel to sand without removing the fish too and had no problems, just cloudy water for a few days.

Others have given good advice on what to do for water changes & if you're using a bucket to do it my tip is to pour the water onto my hand.
Knocking sand up doesnt cause any problems either, my cichlid does it more then i could if i was to build a sand castle in there!

God now i remember why i hated gravel so much and detested cleaning it...give me sand any day,far easier to keep clean,even though in some places you see the poo,but then just suck it out

I use the hand under the water flow myself,especially in the smaller tanks where its easy to kick the substrate about

I use a 25 litre water storer and siphon it back in . Takes a bit longer but means I can look on here whilst water changing hehe
