Last night there is a black out in my area arround 3am in the morning. I was a sleep, when I woke up this morning the power is still off. I then rush most of my discuss to my friend about an hour ago to avoid recycling with amonia spike, so I can cycle again. Now whats left is my planted tank, I took out the sponge from my filter and ###### it smell like  . I bet most of the bacteria is dead by now, should I reuse this spoonge or should I open a new spoonge for my filter again? My bigger tank is now with 7 roseline shark 40xcardinal tetra. I think there still some bacteria left in my gravel so amonia should be low as long I dont feed in the next couple days. Need help real fast.

How long were the filters actually offline?
The filter bacteria wont die off too fast. Any news on when the power will be back on?

the power is back on right now but I think the power went out for about 7-8 hours minimun. I put in a air pump right now so their some air to keep the bacteria in my gravel alive.

7-8 hours of being off is nothing. My dad decided to feed my fish with the filter switched off the other night. He forgot to switch it back on till the morning.
Been testing but haven't even had an ammonia spike.

Seriously don't worry. Just leave the filters running as normal with all media in place.
And the sooner you return the fish to the tank the less die back you'll have.

I gonna wash my spoonge first with my tank water, since it really smell. I'm not gonna take my chance with my discuss for now, since treating sick discuss is a pain in the XXX(They r doing ok over on my friends discuss tank right now). Gonna try to put my spoonge back to my filter for my planted tank. I'll keep this updated.

in the ice storm in the northeast us this past winter my filter was off for over four days and when we got power back it didnt so much as mini cycle. the bacs are hardy if you keep them wet.

I just ran a water test few moments ago, so far so good. Amonia = 0 nitrate and nitrite r on a very safe lvl. Wow I never notice bacteria can live for more then 4 days with out movement / oxygen. Ur barc is really hardy.

Yet in other posts some claim bacteria dies within 3-4 hrs. Just shows people aren't always right :)

On this specific matter, one can easily come to logical conclusion. Fact is, if such bacteria were to die within even six hours, you'd find a lot more reports of power outages and resulting ammonia spikes on boards like this one.
