Currently have a pair of electric blue acara in a 45 gallon tank w plentiful cover from driftwood, rocks, and plants. Any suggestions as to compatible schooling fish, or another companion that isn’t equally eye catching ? Thought about firemouth and severnum but they’re definitely too large. Could Melanotaenia or something comparably sized work?

No idea how long a 45 gallon tnk is but if it's 3 foot or longer and your GH is above 150ppm and pH above 7.0, then most rainbowfish will be fine.

The following link has info on all the currently known rainbowfishes from Australia and New Guinea. There is a link at the bottom of the page to download the e-book onto your hard-drive, or you can click the "Contents" link at top right of page and view the individual species online.

If you click the link to download it might produce a pop-up window. Close that and there should be a small grey window at the bottom of the page that asks if you want to open or download the file. The pop-up window sometimes says you have a virus and pretends to run a virus check. Just ignore it and close the window. It's a pain in the butt advert.

Some of the bigger barbs that grow to 3-4 inches will probably be ok too.
