I have not been on here much recently with going away on a long trip and getting back in the swing of things at work and so the tanks had taken a bit of a back row position. Anyway, I was down at the World of Water last week and saw this little fellow (think it could be male due to its elongated face but I may be wrong - for now until proven otherwise lets say he is a male). He followed me when ever I went past his tank and as I had been after one for a while, this one seemed to stand out at me. Anyway, after a week of thinking about it I went and got him this morning. He is just under one and a half inches long and seems to be eating and socialising like the best of them. He is in my main tank with a large female JD, male Sev and a Jewel. At the moment though he is shoaling with the Barbs which is fun to watch. Fingers crossed!!!

They are not very clear as he will not stop swimming around, but here are some pictures:

Just thought I would share :good:

He looks good now. The color will change over time as he grows. Good luck with him. They are cool fish.

Hope he grows well. These guys are known to be pretty hard to keep alive.

Thanks everyone. He seems to be settling in and eating well. He is easily the smallest fish in the tank but is shoaling with the barbs most if the time. I did read that they were very fragile fish so fingers crossed I get to see him in his full adult colours.

Well seeing as you dont hear of that many EBJD's on here and as I think that they are a beautiful fish, I have decided to turn this into a fish journal (if a moderator reads it, please transfer it into the New World Cichlids journals section).

Since I bought him last week, he has coloured up a little more and has grown by a noticable amount, both in bulk and length. I went to my local MA over the weekend and got talking to one of the workers. He said that it is 99 pecent male, because of the shape of the dorsal fin and the thin red line around it.

He is now as big as several of my smaller Barbs. He is eating well and seems to like everything I put in the tank, including bloodworm, prima, veg flakes, peas, sweetcorn and tonight he started wrestling a few mealworms. This was great to watch as although they were meant for the larger tank mates, he was the first one in there and they were clearly too big for his little mouth! I was worried he might choke, but he seemed to manage.

I have an outbreak of ich in my tank at the moment, but he does not seem to be affected. With the high temperatures that we have recently had, I was having trouble keeping the tank temperature down in the day then it dropped down to the set level at night. I think that this inconsistency might be responsible for the outbreak. I am currently treating it and hopefully all will be well.

The other half has decided to call him Patrick and here is a picture taken tonight:

and a cute one of him sucking on a mealworm:

moved for you :)

the EBJD can be a bit different to keep. i had a small juvi similar to yours and he grew fast for the first few months but when he hit 3 inches ish he seemed to stop..... the diet was the same and water changes were the same so i have no idea what happened to him. i moved him on as the others soon out grew him and he was getting bullied a bit and as far as im aware he never got much bigger with the new owner either.....

on the other side James on here has a stunning 7-8 inch EBJD (pics on here somewhere) for quite a while and i was lucky enough to see it in his tank before it suddenly died of no apparent illness or issues :/ there is also another member on here that has one that turned into a real ugly fish and compared to James' you wouldnt belive they were the same species tbh. its so hit and miss with them, i hope yours is a stunner when mature.

they are stunning fish but can be very weak, be sure to keep an eye on him/her :good:

Cheers for that. Yeh I remember James's, it was a stunner. Hope mine turns out to be like his was. I keep telling myself not to get too attached incase it dies, but I can't help it as he is really cute at the moment. Time will tell hey.

this will be a long thread if the growth rate of my old one is anything to go by

or a very short one if theres nothing to report.....

Ah yes I forgot that you ended up with the one that refused to grow. I'm hoping that doesn't happen. I did read somewhere else that it's around the 3 inch point where they either stop or grow. Guess we will see in a few months.

i hope yours grows into a beauty as it would be nice to have one on the forum again :good:
